In April 2015, Microsoft turned the browser itself into an anti-malware tripwire for advertising: rather than blocking bad ads outright, Internet Explorer would warn users when a page carried an ad laced with malicious code — the same period when misleading 'you must update your player' style ads were a primary infection vector. Later that year Microsoft hardened the approach, updating SmartScreen to block drive-by attacks across IE11 and Edge on Windows 10.

The move sits awkwardly against the rest of the corpus: by late 2015 Microsoft was also committing to detect and remove man-in-the-middle adware like Superfish, yet years later its own distribution tactics drew the same criticism — injecting Edge ads onto Google.com during Chrome downloads and malware-like Bing pop-ups in Windows 11. That tension between policing ads and running them is what makes this a story worth tracking.

  • IE users gain an inline warning layer on pages serving malicious ads, while sites and ad networks that unknowingly host infected creative now face user-visible flags that cost them traffic immediately.
