Facebook testing new notifications tab that acts as news hub, includes birthdays, events, local news, nearby friends, and more

Facebook's new notifications tab is a robust mini-news hub  —  Facebook wants notifications to become much more than a perfunctory list of recent behavior, events and invitations.

Mashable JP Mangalindan

Context & Ripple Effects

In April 2015 Facebook is testing whether its notifications tab can graduate from a passive activity log into a daily utility: birthdays, events, local news and nearby friends bundled into one surface. By October the experiment graduates into a shipped feature, when Facebook bolsters the mobile Notifications tab with location-based news, weather and nearby movie and restaurant info — Business Insider's read at the time was that each addition gives users one more reason not to leave the app.

The notifications hub then becomes a template: weeks later Facebook launches Notify, a standalone iOS notifications app for timely content built on 70 media partners including CNN, NYT and Techmeme, and by 2016 the same reorganization logic reaches Messenger's home tab, which sorts conversations alongside birthdays and favorites.

First-order effects

  • Users testing the new tab get a single destination for time-sensitive personal content — events, birthdays, nearby friends — replacing the old bare-bones notification list, and the October rollout extends that to weather and local business info.

Second-order effects

  • News publishers gain a platform-mediated channel into the notification tray, formalized in Notify's partner model, while rival apps must compete against a Facebook surface that intercepts exactly the utility content (birthdays, reminders, local news) users otherwise open other apps for.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Facebook's engagement stops living primarily in the News Feed and fragments across purpose-built tabs and companion apps — a structure visible later in the internal tabbed News Feed test splitting Most Relevant, Most Recent and Already Seen feeds — giving the company more surfaces to tune for retention and ad inventory.

The trend: Facebook is converting every corner of its app into a dedicated retention surface, turning notifications from an alert list into a curated hub that competes with standalone utility and news apps.
