Instagram Adds Post Notifications For Specific Accounts, Color And Fade Tools

Instagram has a couple of new photo editing tools available in its mobile applications, out today on Android and coming soon to iOS: Color and Fade.  Color lets you adjust the tone of both the highlights …

TechCrunch Darrell Etherington

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram's April 2015 release is an early entry in a long cadence of small creative-tool drops: Color and Fade arrive on Android first with iOS 'coming soon,' and per-account post notifications give users a way to pull specific feeds into their notification tray. That Android-first sequencing becomes a recognizable pattern in later coverage, from the 2016 iPhone 7 camera work to the 2017 eyedropper release.

The notifications piece is the strategically loaded half. It deepens Instagram's grip on attention inside its own app, and three years later the company extends notifications beyond mobile entirely.

First-order effects

  • Android users can immediately tone-adjust highlights and shadows with Color, mute images with Fade, and turn on post notifications for individual accounts; iOS users wait for parity.
  • Accounts whose posts users opt into gain a direct push channel to followers' lock screens, bypassing the feed algorithm for those relationships.

Second-order effects

  • Extending notifications to opted-in accounts sets up the 2018 expansion when Instagram brings notifications to its web apps and Instagram Lite, making the follow relationship a cross-surface alert stream.
  • Per-account alerts raise the bar rivals have to clear on timeliness; the copy-from-Snapchat dynamic visible in the later face filters and eraser release runs both directions as each side ships faster.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Instagram keeps absorbing capture-edit-notify functions in-house — the same consolidation visible when it later adds bulk cleanup tools and DM translation — shrinking the market for standalone filter and scheduling utilities.
  • Notification-per-account also prefigures the engagement-retention machinery at the center of the platform's teen-user efforts, where algorithmic tuning and influencer boosting became documented levers.

The trend: Instagram is compounding retention through a steady drumbeat of small, often copied, Android-first feature releases that fold capture, editing, and alerting entirely into its own app.
