Microsoft built Project Spartan on a from-scratch rendering engine — the EdgeHTML work earlier this year replaced the legacy Trident path, and the company then confirmed the split strategy where Spartan ships Edge while IE 11 keeps Trident on Windows 10. That new engine needs ecosystem buy-in to be taken seriously against established competitors.

Adobe contributing features directly into the browser gives Microsoft exactly that: standards support and technology ideas built in by a major web-platform player rather than bolted on. It also extends a partnership arc that later deepened when Adobe named Azure its preferred cloud solution.
