IBM's OpenPower project began as an attempt to do to Intel's x86 franchise what ARM did to it in mobile: license the Power architecture out so partners build the systems. This first commercial server is the proof point that the consortium model can produce shippable hardware, not just press releases.

The arc that followed validates the move. A year later, Google, HPE and others formalized the OpenCAPI interconnect standard to boost server performance around Power-class silicon, and IBM went further by open sourcing key Power processor technology — a bet that openness, not exclusivity, keeps the architecture alive against x86 and Arm.
