YouTube introduces interactive cards to complement annotations - and they work on mobile too

YouTube annotations - often useful uploader addendums, other times annoying distractions.  Today though, the video platform is announcing a new and improved tool: cards.

In 2015, YouTube's annotations were desktop-only overlays that never worked on mobile — a real problem as viewing shifted to phones. Cards were YouTube's answer: interactive info panels that function on mobile playback, positioned explicitly as a complement to the older tool. The follow-on coverage shows the complement became the replacement: within two years YouTube announced it was retiring the annotations editor entirely and steering creators to mobile-friendly End Screens and Cards.

The card format then expanded well beyond its original purpose — channel-level cards arrived mid-2015, and by early 2016 YouTube added Donation Cards for charity fundraising. The through-line is YouTube steadily rebuilding interactivity around surfaces that work everywhere viewers watch.

First-order effects

  • Creators get a way to attach links and context that actually functions for mobile viewers, where annotations were invisible — the immediate beneficiary is anyone whose audience watches on phones.
  • Annotations lose their main justification: with a mobile-native overlay tool in place, YouTube has an internal alternative to point to when creators complain about the old system.

Second-order effects

  • Once cards prove out, YouTube extends the format into new monetization and engagement surfaces — the same mechanism later carries Donation Cards and channel-wide cards, turning an info layer into a commerce and fundraising channel.
  • The desktop-bound annotation system becomes legacy debt; competitors building video platforms face the same choice between retrofitting old overlays or shipping mobile-first equivalents.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, video platforms treat on-video interactivity as a product surface they control rather than uploader freeform — culminating years later in curated experiments like crowdsourced Notes and the interactive TV app revamp, where context layers are platform-governed rather than creator-styled.
  • Annotation-style overlays effectively die as a category: the successor tools are standardized, mobile-compatible widgets, trading creator freedom for consistency across screens.

The trend: YouTube has spent a decade migrating video interactivity from desktop-only creator overlays to standardized, mobile-first, platform-controlled formats — cards being the pivot point that made annotations obsolete.
