Heading into launch, the open question was whether the sealed-feeling Watch was effectively disposable. iFixit's 205mAh teardown showed a glued-in cell, and pre-launch sourcing had Apple targeting just 2.5 hours of heavy use with a two-hour charge — making the battery the device's defining constraint.

Apple's answer now is that the battery does come out, with a lifecycle of roughly three years. That framing has held ever since: the Series 3 redesign for LTE moved capacity only from 1.03 to 1.07 watt-hours, and by 2024 Apple would formally promise battery-health data for third-party replacement parts in its device-longevity white paper.
