In March 2015 Transport for London began trialing Bluetooth beacons that feed audio directions to blind passengers' smartphones, born from a group of visually impaired young people who wanted to ride the Underground without depending on friends or station staff. The trial became the seed of Wayfindr's open standard, which by late 2017 had won ITU approval as an international wayfinding specification.

The significance is twofold: it turned station-by-station human assistance into portable, passenger-owned navigation, and it made the Underground one of the first transit systems instrumented for indoor positioning — the same sensor layer TfL later leaned on when it rolled out default WiFi device tracking across the network.
