Three days after the HTC–Valve partnership put the Vive on the calendar for year-end launch, Valve hardware engineer Alan Yates is now detailing the piece that makes the headset more than a screen: the Lighthouse room-scale tracking system, which he says brings 'high-resolution' positional tracking that ties TVs and headsets together.

This is the first technical reveal of what became the Vive's core differentiator — coverage of how HTC and Valve built the Vive in under two years shows Lighthouse at the center of that effort — and it set up Valve's later decision to license SteamVR Tracking to developers for free rather than keep it proprietary.
