VMware's hybrid cloud roadmap takes direction with vSphere 6, Nvidia collaboration

vSphere 6 is the foundation layer of what would become VMware's defining decade-long arc: making the hypervisor portable across private data centers and public clouds. The Nvidia collaboration announced alongside it points at the acceleration half of that story — a thread that matured four years later when the two companies formalized a virtualized GPU partnership letting enterprises run AI and machine learning workloads on shared infrastructure.

The other half of the arc was cloud: within two years VMware struck a partnership with Amazon to run its infrastructure software on AWS, which went live by VMworld 2017 and reached European customers in 2018. Read together, vSphere 6 plus Nvidia is the moment the roadmap's two pillars — accelerated hardware and cloud reachability — were both put on the table.

First-order effects

  • Enterprises standardized on vSphere get a stated upgrade path toward hybrid cloud, while Nvidia gains a route to put GPUs into corporate virtualized environments through VMware's installed base rather than standalone server sales.
