This January 2015 launch put WhatsApp in the browser for Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone owners, but notably not iPhone users — Apple's platform got its own web client only after an August delay, making this the first taste of desktop messaging for most of WhatsApp's base.

The arc since has run one direction: a mirrored browser tab became a full desktop app for Windows and Mac in 2016, then a native Windows app that works without linking a phone by 2022. Meanwhile two of the three platforms served at launch didn't last — WhatsApp went on to drop both Nokia-era systems in 2016 and then cut BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone entirely at the end of 2017, so today's story is also the high-water mark for those ecosystems.
