Facebook added voice clips to Messenger in 2013, but the feature carried voicemail's core flaw: recipients had to stop and listen. This test applies the fix Google Voice pioneered for voicemail — automatic transcription — so a sound clip arrives as scannable text, positioning Messenger against the 'least efficient way of communicating' rather than just other chat apps.

The experiment turned out to be an early step in a long voice push: three years later Facebook confirmed Messenger code testing features to dictate messages, place calls, and set reminders (confirmed by Facebook itself), then kept investing with Soundmojis and a move to bring calling back into the main app. Transcription matters because it makes voice machine-readable — the precondition for all of it.
