At CES 2015 Energous pitched WattUp as room-scale wireless power — devices charging from about 15 feet away. Two years later, the reality the company itself announced was far narrower: an FCC-approved Energous product that works from just three feet, debuting at CES 2017.

The gap between that promise and delivery is visible across the rest of the coverage: Qualcomm's answer to charging anxiety was speed over distance with Quick Charge 5, the NFC Forum standardized only 1-watt wireless charging for small devices, and by 2023 Wi-Charge's shipped system managed just 2-3 watts and demanded line of sight between transmitter and receiver.

First-order effects

  • CES attendees in 2015 see a distance claim WattUp cannot ship: Energous' own later FCC filing caps its first product at three feet, so the 15-foot demo is a roadmap item, not a product spec.

  • Smartphone vendors facing the same battery-life pressure route around over-the-air power entirely, adopting wired fast-charging like Qualcomm's Quick Charge 5 rather than waiting on RF-based systems.
