YouTube Will Soon Support 360-Degree Video Uploads

Look out YouTube fans: soon, you'll be able to immerse yourself in videos that go all the way around.  Google has just confirmed to Gizmodo that it will be adding native support for 360-degree videos to its streaming video service.

In January 2015, Google confirmed to Gizmodo that YouTube would take 360-degree video natively — a commitment it made good on within weeks, when the format went live with a navigation dial that let non-VR viewers look around instead of requiring a headset.

That headset-free playback is what turned an experimental capture format into a mass upload target: by early 2016 sources said YouTube was meeting with camera makers about live 360-degree broadcasting, and Facebook was separately building a standalone video app for 360-degree footage — putting the two biggest social video platforms on the same feature.

First-order effects

  • YouTube creators gain a native upload path for spherical footage, removing the need for third-party players or dedicated apps to publish immersive video.

Second-order effects

  • Facebook's standalone 360-degree video app becomes a direct competitive answer, forcing both platforms to court the same early spherical-camera owners for exclusive-feeling content.
  • Camera manufacturers gain a mainstream distribution outlet: once YouTube accepts the format at scale, consumer 360 cameras have a reason to exist beyond niche VR audiences.

  • If adoption holds, immersive video standardizes around platform-native formats — visible later in Vimeo supporting monoscopic and stereoscopic modes across Daydream, Gear VR, and Zeiss hardware, and in Google's VR180 standard trading full spherical capture for a cheaper half-view aimed at ordinary creators.

The trend: Social video platforms are absorbing immersive formats as native upload features, competing first on headset-free playback and then on live capability while camera makers follow the platform standards.
