TRM Labs attributes the Binance hack to North Korea-based TraderTraitor, which drained ~$6.36B from Binance wallets across 10 blockchains, mostly in ~20 minutes

Tom Westbrook /Reuters:NEW

Reuters Tom Westbrook

Context & Ripple Effects

TRM Labs had already found that North Korea-affiliated actors accounted for nearly a third of crypto thefts in 2023. The FBI later described TraderTraitor-linked activity behind attacks on Alphapo, CoinsPaid and Atomic Wallet, establishing a recurring threat pattern rather than an isolated exchange incident.

In February 2025, the FBI attributed the $1.5 billion Bybit theft to TraderTraitor. TRM Labs' attribution in the Binance case therefore connects the largest reported exchange loss in this corpus to an actor set that investigators had previously identified publicly.

First-order effects

  • Binance must investigate its potential security issue against a specific TraderTraitor threat model after TRM Labs said roughly $6.36 billion moved from its wallets across 10 blockchains.
  • TRM Labs' attribution gives Binance, its customers and counterparties a public basis to distinguish the incident from ordinary wallet outflows and focus scrutiny on the exchange's security controls.

Second-order effects

  • The earlier FBI attribution of the Bybit breach raises the pressure on Binance and other centralized exchanges to reassess defenses against the same actor set, rather than treating the event as a Binance-only operational failure.
  • The movement across 10 blockchains makes cross-chain tracing and coordination central to containment, increasing the value of blockchain-intelligence providers such as TRM Labs in exchange incident response.

Third-order effects

  • If repeated TraderTraitor attributions hold, major crypto exchanges will face security competition on their ability to detect and contain state-linked intrusions across multiple chains, not merely safeguard individual wallets.
  • The pattern points toward crypto-risk management being shaped by persistent nation-state-linked theft campaigns, with public attribution becoming part of how exchanges establish accountability after breaches.

The trend: Repeated attribution of major exchange thefts to TraderTraitor is pushing crypto security toward cross-chain monitoring and response built for persistent state-linked adversaries.
