Google plans to expand “high-quality ads within AI Overviews in AI Mode” into international markets, as growth in its core search ad business slows

Lauren Forristal /TechCrunch:

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had already built the distribution layer for this move: AI Mode reached 180 countries and territories in English in 2025, and Search Live expanded across AI Mode’s supported regions and languages in March 2026. That broadened the audience for conversational search before its advertising model was extended internationally.

The monetization path also has precedent. Google tested search and shopping placements in AI Overviews in 2024 and began rolling out sponsored placements in AI Mode in 2025; expanding them abroad ties that product surface more directly to a core ad business whose growth is slowing.

First-order effects

  • Google gains additional international inventory in AI Mode, creating another channel to sell search advertising as its established search-ad business decelerates.
  • Advertisers in the newly covered markets can seek visibility inside AI Mode answers, where sponsored results are presented alongside answer citations.

Second-order effects

  • Google’s ad teams face pressure to show that AI Mode placements can preserve advertiser demand as users encounter fewer conventional search-result pages.
  • The expansion makes Google’s existing AI Mode footprint a commercial distribution advantage: markets already reached by the product can be monetized without waiting for a separate consumer rollout.

Third-order effects

  • If advertising becomes a standard layer of conversational search, search monetization shifts from selling placement beside links toward selling placement within AI-generated answer journeys.
  • That transition raises the strategic value of owning both the AI interface and the global user distribution needed to turn it into ad inventory.

The trend: Google is extending its search-ad model into AI interfaces, using international product distribution to monetize conversational search as legacy search-ad growth slows.

Google Cloud just did $30B+ and beat by $1.6B. Stock still down 8%. The market isn't asking “is AI growing?” anymore. It's asking “is it paying for $200B in capex?” Tonight the answer was “not yet.”

YIKES! -> Google earnings call: “It's worth noting that the strong growth in AI mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI mode.”
