Google reports Search revenue up 12% YoY to $63.25B in Q3 2026, down from 14.5% in Q3 2025, and attributes the slowdown to “lower monetization” in AI Mode

Shares in Google's parent company Alphabet dived by almost ten percent on Wednesday, after the web giant admitted …

The Register Simon Sharwood

Context & Ripple Effects

Google's advertising business had already shown how quickly search growth can weaken: Q3 2022 ad sales missed expectations, followed by a year-over-year advertising decline in early 2023. By Q3 2024, Search had returned to 12% growth, making the latest disclosure less about demand disappearing than about the economics of the AI-led search experience.

Alphabet's Q3 results also included $51.36 billion in capital expenditures and negative free cash flow. That makes the stated monetization gap in AI Mode material to both the core ad business and the investment case for its AI rollout.

First-order effects

  • Google must improve revenue generation in AI Mode as it expands the format, because Alphabet has identified lower monetization there as a drag on Search growth.
  • Alphabet shares fell by almost 10% after the results, putting investor focus on whether AI-assisted search can sustain the economics of the company's largest revenue stream.

Second-order effects

  • Alphabet's negative free cash flow and large capital expenditures sharpen scrutiny of the return produced by AI search, rather than treating AI Mode as a distribution feature alone.
  • Expanding ads in AI Mode to additional markets gives Google more placements to test, but lower monetization means ad formats and pricing must prove they can approach conventional Search economics.

Third-order effects

  • Search performance is increasingly judged by revenue per AI-mediated interaction, not query growth alone, as answer-style experiences alter where ads can appear.
  • If AI Mode takes a larger role in search behavior, Alphabet's durable advantage will depend on turning distribution into monetizable inventory without eroding the economics of its established ad model.

The trend: Web search is shifting toward answer-engine economics, where AI distribution is valuable only insofar as it can support advertising revenue at an acceptable cost.

Google Cloud just did $30B+ and beat by $1.6B. Stock still down 8%. The market isn't asking “is AI growing?” anymore. It's asking “is it paying for $200B in capex?” Tonight the answer was “not yet.”
