SK Hynix reports Q3 revenue up 328% YoY to ~$78.8B, above ~$74.07B est., and operating profit up 632% to ~$62.76B, above ~$57.78B est. and a company record

South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix on Wednesday posted a record high quarterly profit, sharply beating estimates, and announced over $25 billion in dividends and buybacks …

CNBC Jenny Lee

Context & Ripple Effects

SK Hynix's earnings recovery had already moved from a 2024 return to profitability to a record Q3 in 2025 powered by HBM demand, followed by another company-record quarter in early 2026. The progression matters because the gains have broadened alongside rising memory prices and AI-focused demand rather than appearing as a one-quarter rebound.

The company identifies server DDR5, data-center SSDs and HBM4 shipments as contributors to the latest result. Its announced dividends and buybacks put shareholder distributions at the center of how it deploys the cash generated by that mix.

First-order effects

  • SK Hynix shareholders are the immediate beneficiaries of the announced dividends and buybacks, which direct part of the quarter's record profit back to investors.
  • SK Hynix enters customer negotiations with a stronger earnings benchmark for the server DDR5, data-center SSD and HBM4 products it says drove growth.

Second-order effects

  • Large cloud customers covered by SK Hynix's claimed long-term agreements have a greater incentive to secure supply over multiyear periods, tying procurement more closely to a supplier whose AI-memory earnings are accelerating.
  • The scale of the earnings beat raises the bar for SK Hynix's capital-allocation choices: investors will weigh further shareholder returns against the investment needed to support its higher-value memory lines.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern of rising memory prices and sharply higher profit persists, memory economics will increasingly be set by AI-oriented server products rather than by a single undifferentiated chip market.
  • The combination of supply commitments and shareholder payouts points to an AI-memory cycle in which leading suppliers can convert constrained, specialized capacity into both pricing power and durable investor-return expectations.

The trend: The AI-memory capex cycle is concentrating profits in suppliers able to serve HBM, server-memory and data-center storage demand while securing longer customer commitments.

SK HYNIX: EXPECTS DEMAND TO OUTPACE SUPPLY THROUGH 2030

They said on the last earnings call, and again today, that memory supply will not meet demand until the next decade, and possibly beyond. Don't expect prices to drop. And if you're waiting for them to come down, it's honestly probably better to just bite the bullet.

@SKhynix posted record results in 3Q26, with revenue surpassing KRW 100 trillion for the first time. Growth was driven by server DDR5 and data center SSDs, alongside HBM4 shipments. LTAs cover over 50% of 2027-2028 capacity. 🔗 https://news.skhynix.com/... #SKhynix #FI3Q26

Biggest takeway from SK Hynix 3Q earnings: Bit shipment (finally) climbed as escalating capex kicked in, offsetting a slowdown in ASPs NAND looked relatively weak with a DROP in bit-shipments.
