DeepSeek open-sources DeepInfer, its high-performance inference framework that powers its production services, starting with support for DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash

DeepSeek is opening up the software it uses to run its artificial intelligence models at scale, potentially making its technology cheaper and easier for businesses to run.

Bloomberg Saritha Rai

Context & Ripple Effects

DeepSeek had already signaled an open-source posture with its 2025 plan to publish five code repositories. Its model work has also been paired with serving-efficiency efforts: DSpark, its speculative-decoding framework, was presented in June as a way to speed V4 inference.

Opening the production stack extends the October V4.1-Flash update beyond model performance claims to the software layer that determines how the model is run at scale. DeepSeek says the release includes optimized kernels, distributed inference and speculative decoding, with initial support for V4.1-Flash.

First-order effects

  • Businesses and developers deploying DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash can access the same inference framework DeepSeek uses for its production services, rather than relying only on the model release.
  • DeepSeek makes its serving implementation available for inspection and modification, giving adopters a route to tune throughput, latency and deployment architecture around V4.1-Flash.

Second-order effects

  • The release lowers the practical gap between using DeepSeek’s models through its services and operating them independently, because adopters can evaluate the serving stack alongside the model.
  • DeepSeek’s own inference techniques become reusable building blocks for organizations that want to deploy its models, putting more emphasis on operational efficiency than on model access alone.

Third-order effects

  • If the framework attracts external contributors and deployments, open model competition will increasingly turn on reproducible serving economics—kernels, distributed scheduling and decoding—not model weights alone.
  • Inference is becoming a separable strategic layer: model developers can use an open production stack to spread their deployment approach beyond their own hosted service.

The trend: AI model providers are opening the inference stack alongside model releases, making deployment efficiency a competitive product rather than a proprietary back-end capability.

This is freakin' crazy - so DeepSeek has 10 month payback on GPU purchase, despite being 20 times cheaper than OpenAI/Anthropic. And they are enabling everyone + every company to have your own AI, your own inference, your own data. Cancel the fucking IPOs 😂 This is so insane 😂

This is a very big deal. DeepSeeks inference system is on par with OpenAIs stack and better what Anthropic is running (at l ast for their user size).
