Google unveils the $180 Fitbit Edge, featuring an oval, 1.34" display and shipping October 27, replacing the Fitbit Charge 6 and discontinuing the Charge line

The Edge, which replaces the Fitbit Charge 6, offers consumers another vehicle for trying out the recently revamped Google Health app.

Bloomberg Samantha Kelly

Context & Ripple Effects

Fitbit's Charge line had been iterating toward deeper Google integration: the 2023 Charge 6 added Google-service integration after the GPS-equipped Charge 4 and the display-focused Charge 5. Edge ends that product lineage while raising the entry price from the Charge 6's $160 to $180.

The hardware change also gives the revamped Google Health app a dedicated new access point. Google's separately announced Health Guardian availability on Edge for Google Health Premium users ties the device transition to its paid health-service layer.

First-order effects

  • Charge 6 shoppers and existing users lose the Charge upgrade path; Google positions Edge as the replacement device shipping October 27.
  • Google Health gains another consumer hardware channel, with Edge buyers able to use the revamped app and Premium members slated to receive Health Guardian on the device.

Second-order effects

  • Google can use the Edge transition to make Google Health Premium's device-specific features a clearer upgrade incentive than the Charge line provided.
  • Fitbit's wearable portfolio becomes more explicitly segmented around Air, Edge, and the higher-end Pixel Watch category, a framing echoed in contemporaneous public reactions.

Third-order effects

  • If Google continues attaching differentiated health software to successive Fitbit devices, Fitbit's value proposition shifts from standalone tracker features toward recurring software services delivered through a tiered hardware range.

The trend: Google is recasting Fitbit hardware as an entry point to a tiered Google Health service, rather than maintaining the Charge line as a separate tracker franchise.
