SpaceX agrees to acquire a low-band spectrum portfolio to help Starlink “become a major mobile carrier in the US”; AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon shares fall 5%+

Elon Musk's SpaceX said it acquired low-band spectrum that will enable it to use its Starlink satellites to become a …

Bloomberg

Context & Ripple Effects

Starlink’s mobile push began with its first Direct to Cell-capable satellites in 2024 and an FCC-approved arrangement with T-Mobile for supplemental coverage. SpaceX then expanded its spectrum position through the EchoStar AWS-4 and H-block license agreement, later cleared by the FCC in 2026.

The nationwide low-band portfolio moves Starlink beyond a carrier-partner extension model toward the spectrum control associated with a standalone mobile offering. The breadth of same-day coverage and the after-hours declines cited for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon show investors treating that positioning as a competitive challenge.

First-order effects

  • SpaceX gains another low-band spectrum asset for Starlink Mobile, supporting its stated aim of becoming a major US carrier.
  • T-Mobile’s supplemental-coverage partnership with Starlink sits alongside a partner whose stated mobile ambitions increasingly overlap with its core market.

Second-order effects

  • AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon face pressure to explain how terrestrial networks, spectrum holdings and satellite partnerships defend their customer proposition against Starlink’s planned coverage model.
  • The acquisition raises the strategic value of mobile spectrum portfolios to satellite operators, following SpaceX’s earlier EchoStar license deal.

Third-order effects

  • If Starlink converts spectrum control and its satellite network into a retail mobile service, US wireless competition shifts from carrier-led satellite add-ons toward direct competition between terrestrial carriers and integrated constellation operators.
  • Spectrum policy and FCC licensing become more central to market structure as the boundary between satellite coverage and mobile-carrier service narrows.

The trend: US mobile connectivity is moving from carrier-led satellite supplementation toward constellation operators assembling the spectrum and network assets needed to compete directly.

During the Biden Administration they passed a $42 billion program to provide rural internet access. Biden kicked SpaceX out of the program entirely due to political reasons. SpaceX achieved global (not just USA) internet access without even using the Biden program subsidies.

Guys, @Starlink isn't going to magically become a mobile carrier with 14MHz of low-band spectrum. That's not going to be usable as a mobile network outside rural areas. They are still going to need a terrestrial network, and 14 MHz ain't much for that. Even with AWS3 and AWS4 spe…

Remember when the Biden admin set up a $42.5bn dollar program for rural broadband? Despite awarding over $18 billion, it hasn't even connected 1% of the people it was supposed to after more than 5 years. Starlink is going to beat it to the punch for a fraction of the cost.

Radio spectrum is like invisible money. SpaceX will acquire 100% of Grain's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio. “Get Low” by Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz is really a song about in-building penetration of radio waves at frequencies like 800 MHz. https://www.wsj.com/...
