Nvidia, Oracle, CoreWeave, and other AI stocks fell after a report that OpenAI's annualized revenue at September's end was $20B less than previously reported

CNBC

Context & Ripple Effects

AI-infrastructure shares had already shown sensitivity to doubts about whether spending would produce commensurate returns: Nvidia fell in February despite better-than-expected earnings amid concerns about the infrastructure boom, while Broadcom, CoreWeave and Oracle extended a prior decline in December 2025. The latest revenue-report discrepancy ties that valuation question to a major buyer and user of AI compute rather than to chip demand in the abstract.

The reaction also echoes Nvidia's 2024 pullback when investors questioned the payoff from large technology companies' AI spending. Broad distribution of the report across financial outlets makes the revenue metric itself a focal point for assessing exposure to the AI buildout.

First-order effects

  • Nvidia, Oracle and CoreWeave shares fall as investors reassess the demand assumptions embedded in their AI-infrastructure valuations.
  • OpenAI's reported annualized-revenue figure becomes a more consequential input for investors evaluating companies whose growth is tied to AI compute deployment.

Second-order effects

  • Oracle and CoreWeave face greater investor pressure to show that their infrastructure exposure is supported by durable customer monetization rather than broad expectations for AI demand.
  • Nvidia's valuation becomes more sensitive to evidence about customers' ability to turn AI usage into revenue, extending the pattern seen in earlier spending-payoff selloffs.

Third-order effects

  • If revenue reporting and monetization metrics remain central triggers for infrastructure-stock moves, AI buildout financing will increasingly be priced against end-user revenue quality rather than announced compute demand alone.
  • The episode points to AI infrastructure becoming a demand-transmission trade: a reassessment of a major model provider's economics rapidly affects chip, cloud and compute-specialist valuations.

The trend: AI infrastructure is being valued less as a standalone hardware cycle and more as a leveraged claim on AI customers' demonstrated commercialization.

@OpenAI counted its partners' revenue as its own. Wall Street's response? Sell the chipmakers. 🤦‍♂️ That's like shorting the casino because one gambler counted his buddy's chips. Wrong table, folks. Not all tech is the same $NVDA $ORCL $AMD https://www.cnbc.com/...

i am not fully sure what the hell went on with all this weird OAI math but i do agree with dan that this is the most unsatisfying part of fragmented numbers leaks as a reader, one should go into any piece on this stuff thinking “why is this leaking right now”

@danprimack Microsoft, Amazon, Google have uniquely different cloud businesses and perfectly rational but different t approaches to GAAP, and that doesn't stop the street from doing comparisons and counting share as if it is 100% interchangeable.

I lack real clarity on whether the FT story on OpenAI is “new” news given my contacts at the company. But if FT doesn't take it back.. it doesn't matter

To dig into why OpenAI and Anthropic calculate annualized revenue differently (and why there is a $20B discrepancy): read my March story in @theinformation: https://www.theinformation.com/ ...

Some context behind FT report on OpenAI that hit Nasdaq, AI stocks earlier 📉 Mostly an accounting difference. But speaks to opacity of trillion-dollar private companies .. and how central they are to the entire tech trade Also hearing these numbers came from a pitch deck [video]
  • @mmurph @mmurph on x
Good call out @deedydas. lots of speculation recently re @OpenAI catching @AnthropicAI. sounds like OAI are $20B+ behind with much of runrate in consumer, so less than half the size in enterprise?!
  • @kantrowitz Alex Kantrowitz on x
The entire $20B in ‘missing’ OpenAI revenue was due to its investors trying to count revenue similar to Anthropic's method, and then not telling the FT when it ran with those skewed numbers? Interesting.
  • @danprimack Dan Primack on x
This OpenAI/FT stuff is the sort of thing that would be eliminated if both it and Anthropic go public. Apples/apples GAAP accounting for all to see. Rather than drip, drip cherry-picked financial leaks.

@Avery_Coree When the entire market rides on the performance of these two companies, a delta of 30% MoM growth and 50% MoM growth is significant

OpenAI's annualized revenue is actually $20B LESS than the $70B number @axios reported last month... https://www.ft.com/...
  • @deedydas Deedy on x
OpenAI tells investors their annualized revenue is $50B for end of September, up from $30B in July, short of the $70B previously reported. Anthropic was at $65B annualized end of July.

Re: FT OpenAI headline chaos.  CNBC just reported on air, according to a source familar: $70 billion ARR includes “revenue sharing from their big partners” (think AMZN, MSFT).  “The way that they [OpenAI] have been reporting revenue has included some of these partnership deals” T…

Evidence of how leveraged the entire tech sector is to OpenAI & Anthropic: an FT story about OpenAI's revenue's being less than initially reported is spurring a more than 5% drop in Oracle shares, exacerbating losses from Nvidia and AMD to Microsoft https://www.ft.com/.... [image…
