Amazon retires the Fire brand for tablets after 15 years, replacing it with Alexa Tablets that run Android and ship from October 14, including the $499 12 Pro

They're powerful, priced to move, and filled with AI ideas.  Don't you dare call them Fire tablets.

The Verge David Pierce

Context & Ripple Effects

Amazon’s tablet strategy had long emphasized low prices and Amazon-controlled software, from the $50 Fire tablet in 2015 to the $150 Fire HD 10 refresh in 2021. A 2025 report on an Android-based overhaul signaled a break with the Fire OS approach Amazon had used since 2011.

The new lineup turns that anticipated reset into a higher-end, Alexa-led product family. Coverage of the launch frames Android and Google Play access as central to broadening the tablets beyond Amazon’s earlier media-consumption focus.

First-order effects

  • Amazon ends the Fire tablet identity and moves its tablet buyers to Alexa-branded hardware running Android, with the $499 12 Pro establishing a markedly higher price tier.
  • Android and Google Play give app developers a more standard route to Amazon tablet users than Amazon’s former Fire OS environment.

Second-order effects

  • The 12 Pro invites direct comparison with iPad-class work tablets, forcing Amazon to compete on hardware, app access, and Alexa-led features rather than low entry pricing alone.
  • Developers that had treated Fire OS as a separate target can prioritize standard Android distribution, while Amazon loses some software-layer separation from the wider Android ecosystem.

Third-order effects

  • If Amazon extends the Alexa name across more hardware, the company’s device portfolio will be organized less around individual product brands and more around Alexa as the interface and AI distribution layer.
  • A sustained shift from subsidized media devices to premium Android hardware would make Amazon a more conventional tablet competitor while concentrating differentiation in its assistant services.

The trend: Amazon is using Android compatibility and Alexa branding to turn its hardware base into a broader distribution channel for AI-assisted services.

The new Alexa Tablets are absurd for their price points and compete with the iPad Air.

Amazon is starting over with tablets. The company's new Alexa Tablets correct past mistakes — they now include Google apps and the Play Store — with a better design that maintains very low prices. The “Nanomatte” display is also fantastic. Gift link: https://www.bloomberg.com/...

How did Panos convince Amazon to let him do ‘high-end’ Android tablets with Google Play?  With 120Hz matte displays?  And at iPad-beating prices?  🤣  —  This feels like a shot across the bow  —  https://www.aboutamazon.com/ ...  [images]
