Sources: Meta and Microsoft are working to cut their employees' Claude use; source: Meta employees using Claude Code dropped from ~60K earlier in 2026 to ~30K

Meta Platforms and Microsoft, two of Anthropic's biggest corporate customers, are working to cut their employees' use of Claude …

The Information

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta had already moved from measuring Claude consumption to actively governing it: it shut the employee-built Claudeonomics usage leaderboard in April, then said in June it would limit tokens and steer staff toward MetaCode after its 2026 AI-spending forecast reached billions. The reduction in Claude Code users extends that internal-software and cost-control program.

For Microsoft and Meta, reducing employee reliance on an external model provider makes internal AI tooling a procurement and budget decision, not only a developer preference. For Anthropic, two major corporate accounts are seeking to reduce a source of high-volume workplace usage.

First-order effects

  • Meta's Claude Code user base has fallen to about 30,000 from about 60,000 earlier in 2026, while Meta and Microsoft work to lower employee use of Claude.
  • Anthropic faces reduced internal demand from two major corporate customers as their employees are directed away from Claude.

Second-order effects

  • MetaCode gains a more captive internal audience, making Meta's own tooling the default channel for employee AI work rather than an optional alternative to Claude.
  • Anthropic's enterprise sales effort must contend with customers that are not merely managing token budgets but promoting their own AI tools to employees.

Third-order effects

  • If these policies persist, large AI buyers will increasingly consolidate employee usage behind in-house interfaces and models, narrowing the role of third-party model providers inside their own organizations.
  • AI procurement shifts toward control of the employee workflow and usage budget, with model quality only one part of the buying decision.

The trend: Large AI customers are moving from open-ended access to external models toward centrally managed, in-house AI tools as usage costs scale.

Meta too. And yet, bc compute is super tight, any freed up finds a home instantly....Lab rev is capacity gated. And the preponderance of evidence suggests there's no spare token production dying for home.

NEW: Microsoft and Meta, two of Anthropic's MAJOR customers, are working to cut employee usage of Claude models. the reason: cost. Claude bills are exploding and they're pushing their own tools. Microsoft doesn't pay for OpenAI models so they're sending most queries to them.

SCOOP: Microsoft internal Anthropic spend was $1b annualized earlier this year, now down >33% Meta has cut Claude Code seats from 60k to 30k In Microsoft's case, lower internal spending has been offset by higher customer Claude use, total Anth spend flat https://www.theinformatio…

Getting a lot of questions this morning from investors asking if we have even more detail like this. New: Microsoft lowered its internal claude spending projections by 1/3 and Meta cut the number of employees using Claude by half. @aaronpholmes @jyoti_mann1 @KevKubernetes https:/…

I was wondering why SemiAnalysis attempted to pump Anthropic subscriptions today. LOL

Given Anthropic's revenue concentration and contribution from top 2 customers (of which many people assume Meta was), this could be a meaningful drag on the trajectory of growth.  Token cost optimization era has began in earnest...

the funniest thing about anthropic's enterprise numbers is that some of the customers making them look incredible are actively trying to stop being customers meta isn't going to happily rent frontier intelligence forever if it can build it.  microsoft isn't going to stop pushing …

So much reporting on the Claude or OpenAI usage of the same handful of technology companies with competing products & huge cloud infrastructure of their own. There are many, many more firms out there that are not direct competitors & whose use trends would be more informative.

$META would not be lowering spent on Claude if their internal models woudn't be good. Zuck understands and cares too much about quality and the importance of it when it comes to product dev. Watermelon incoming.

There are two types of investors. Those who know the Anthropic ARR numbers and those who don't. They aren't looking so good in the past few months.
  • @stocksavvyshay Shay Boloor on x
More companies are going to start treating tokens like a real budget which keeps AI usage growing but puts a lot more pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic pricing.

Microsoft internal Claude spend estimate has been slashed by more than a third  —  Meta is experiencing a similar internal shift...Claude Code usage recently dropping to roughly 30,000 employees from approximately 60,000 earlier this year
