Hands-on with Dots, OpenAI's work-focused agentic product: highly capable and intuitive, with natural-feeling conversations represented as a chat inside ChatGPT

www.reuters.com/world/europe...

Platformer Casey Newton

Context & Ripple Effects

Dots extends OpenAI’s 2025 ChatGPT Agent, which combined Operator and deep-research capabilities but was described as less customizable than Claude Code. The new product packages persistent work around a conversational interface rather than a separate technical tool.

The launch pairs agents with messaging inside ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams and follows the introduction of ChatGPT Space as a shared pages-and-files hub. That places Dots inside the places where teams discuss work and store its context.

First-order effects

  • ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise users gain an always-on agent with its own cloud computer, while the hands-on framing emphasizes chat as the control surface for assigning and following work.
  • OpenAI makes Dots reachable through ChatGPT and workplace messaging tools, reducing the need for users to move into a dedicated agent interface.

Second-order effects

  • Slack and Microsoft Teams become more consequential distribution and interaction layers for OpenAI’s agent, because a task can be initiated and updated in the channels where teams already coordinate.
  • ChatGPT Space and Dots form a tighter work loop: shared files and pages can become the context layer for an agent that continues work outside a single chat session.

Third-order effects

  • If conversational control proves sufficient for complex delegated work, agent products will compete less on standalone interfaces and more on persistent access to workspace context, communications and cloud execution.
  • The shift from a user-operated ChatGPT Agent to always-on Dots points toward AI work products being judged on reliability of ongoing delegation, not only the quality of one-off answers.

The trend: OpenAI is moving ChatGPT from a prompt-driven assistant toward a workflow-native work surface where agents persist across conversations, collaboration tools and shared context.

i think ive figured it out openai employees exclusively use dots via slack. no one is actually testing out the experience directly via the desktop or iOS apps anymore because they're all just using slack all day every day. slack is their omni-app now.

Something I still don't understand about Dots (can't bring myself to use lowercase) is why they lack voice mode and instead force you to make a phone call.  I'm not sure if it actually makes a phone call or just mimics it, but it rings and everything.  Is it unnecessary skeuomorp…

Thank you Mr. Altman for making Dots available only on Pro while Muse stays free across $META massive consumer base. That gives Meta a massive head start because agents get stickier as they learn more about you & every month Muse builds those habits makes it harder to replace.
