OpenAI expands ChatGPT plugins with interactive panels and file viewers, launches a Plugin Creator tool, and adds MCP Events support for plugin automations

Sarah Perez /TechCrunch:

Context & Ripple Effects

ChatGPT plugins began in 2023 as a route for OpenAI’s own tools and outside services into the assistant, with early partners including travel, commerce, productivity and automation companies in the first third-party plugin cohort. OpenAI then made its in-house Code Interpreter broadly available to Plus subscribers, establishing file work and data analysis as native assistant tasks through the Code Interpreter rollout.

The expansion follows an August 2026 Apple Messages integration that let ChatGPT work with messages on macOS, extending the plugin model into a user’s existing work surface through the Apple Messages plugin. Commentary is split: OpenAI describes a full native-app model, while one observer argues the company has repeatedly restarted third-party ecosystem efforts.

First-order effects

  • Plugin developers can pair conversational responses with interactive panels and file viewers, while the Plugin Creator lowers the barrier to building those extensions.
  • MCP server operators can use Events to send updates that trigger ChatGPT plugin automations instead of relying only on user-initiated requests.

Second-order effects

  • The early plugin partners—such as Expedia, Instacart, Shopify, Slack and Zapier—face a higher product bar: a simple chat integration is less differentiated when plugins can present dedicated interfaces and act on event-driven updates.
  • OpenAI becomes a more consequential distribution and workflow layer for connected services, concentrating questions about plugin discovery and user interaction inside ChatGPT.

Third-order effects

  • If developers adopt the new tooling, ChatGPT’s plugin ecosystem shifts from a directory of conversational integrations toward an assistant work surface where third parties supply task-specific interfaces and automations.
  • MCP Events points to a broader model in which assistants are not only queried for work but are subscribed to operational changes, making event design a core part of AI integration strategy.

The trend: ChatGPT is evolving from a prompt-based assistant into an operating layer for third-party interfaces, files and event-driven workflows.

You bring the app. OpenAI brings the intelligence. Does OpenAI also get the user traces? An interesting partnership, if your contribution is teaching your partner how to do your job. https://x.com/...

We are opening up our platform and you can now build full native apps with plugin extensions, and ship them right in ChatGPT. We have over 1.2B weekly users and will surface relevant plugins right in the conversations.

It does feel like every year OpenAI releases a variation on the same third-party ecosystem only to semi-abandon it: Plugins in 2023, GPTs and the GPT Store in 2023-2024, Apps in 2025, and now Plugins (same name, different thing than before) in 2026.
