Microsoft confirms that 2026 Surface PCs have dropped the Copilot+ PC branding, even though they meet all the requirements of Copilot+ devices
In a new interview, Microsoft Surface CVP confirms that its new Surface PCs are no longer called Copilot+ PCs, but will still support all Copilot+ features.
The branding change separates that expanding feature set from a named hardware tier. It follows an earlier Surface design that tied local AI hardware and a dedicated assistant control together through the Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10 enterprise refresh.
First-order effects
2026 Surface buyers retain the Copilot+ feature set, but Microsoft stops presenting Copilot+ as the product-category label for those PCs.
Microsoft must explain AI eligibility through individual Windows and Copilot features rather than a single Surface badge.
Second-order effects
As Copilot+ functions span Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel systems, Surface’s hardware marketing has less reason to make a processor-qualified AI label the primary buying signal.
PC makers using the same Windows feature set face pressure to distinguish their machines on implementation and product positioning rather than the Copilot+ name.
Third-order effects
If feature availability continues to widen across silicon platforms, “AI PC” branding is likely to give way to AI capabilities being treated as standard Windows product features, with differentiation moving to hardware execution and software experience.
The trend: Microsoft is shifting PC AI positioning from a discrete Copilot+ hardware category toward broadly available Windows capabilities delivered across more chip platforms.
When Microsoft announced the Copilot+ PC and related “AI PC” branding it was a “holy crap, circle the wagons!” moment in marketing. I led a cross-functional team and we came up with “Mac is the best AI PC” as a sub-campaign of “Mac does that.
Microsoft managed to make “Copilot” mean “AI slop” thanks shipping completely broken and forced Copilot features for years, so ppl hate it. Not too dissimilar to Google's Gemini integrations that are just as unserious. Corporate incentives... (I am not talking about GH Copilot) […
Well, many of you asked for it, so here we go: Copilot+ PC is gone💨 I think it was a fair attempt to market against what seems (and arguably still is) the biggest shift in technology since the internet itself, but what has been hyped, promised, and delivered (especially for consu…
