India's SMS GupShup Has 3x The Usage Of Twitter And No Downtime

I recently started using Twitter and have become a big fan of the service.  I've been appalled by the downtime the service has endured, but sympathetic because I assumed the growth in usage is so fast that much might be excused.

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter’s reliability problems were already a recurring concern in earlier coverage of Twitter outages and in an April assessment of whether it could stop treating uptime as a priority. GupShup’s reported scale and uninterrupted operation turn reliability into a direct comparison point rather than merely a growing-pains complaint.

First-order effects

  • GupShup gains a credibility advantage with users evaluating high-volume messaging services on availability as well as audience size.
  • Twitter’s reported downtime becomes harder to dismiss as a consequence of rapid growth when GupShup says it handles greater usage without interruptions.

Second-order effects

  • Twitter’s operational priorities face sharper scrutiny: improving service reliability competes for attention with the company’s effort to convert a loyal following into a business.
  • Users choosing between Twitter and GupShup have a concrete reliability benchmark, making outages a potential switching cost for Twitter rather than only a temporary inconvenience.

Third-order effects

  • If the reported comparison holds, messaging platforms will be judged increasingly on their ability to sustain peak usage, not simply on user growth or cultural visibility.

The trend: Real-time messaging is moving toward an availability-first competition, where scale claims matter only when the service stays accessible under demand.
