Meta's personal AI agent Muse climbs to No. 1 among free apps on Apple's US App Store, ahead of ChatGPT; Muse launched on September 8

Mark Zuckerberg's ambition to bring “personal superintelligence” to everyone may be taking shape, one download at a time.

Business Insider Georgia Hennessy

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta introduced Muse on September 8 as a cloud-VM-based agent, with a free allowance and paid compute tiers in its initial pricing model. It then extended the product from iOS, Android and the web to a Mac app capable of working with files and other apps.

The App Store result is an early distribution signal for Meta’s attempt to make a personal agent a cross-device product rather than a single chatbot destination. Zuckerberg also said developers would be able to build Muse connectors, framing the service as a potential route into third-party APIs.

First-order effects

  • Muse’s top free-app position gives Meta prominent consumer discovery on Apple’s US storefront and puts ChatGPT behind it in that ranking.
  • Meta gains a larger immediate pool of users for its free tier and a clearer funnel for its $20 and $100 monthly compute plans.

Second-order effects

  • ChatGPT faces a sharper acquisition contest on iPhone as Meta pairs a free agent with availability across mobile, web and Mac.
  • Developers offering Muse connectors gain an incentive to expose APIs through Meta’s agent, because user requests can become a distribution path to their services.

Third-order effects

  • If Muse retains users across its device apps, personal agents may compete less on a standalone chat interface and more on who owns the cross-device work surface and third-party connections.
  • Apple’s App Store remains a consequential gatekeeper for consumer-agent distribution even when the underlying agent runs in a provider’s cloud.

The trend: Consumer AI is moving toward cross-device agents that combine cloud execution, local app access and developer integrations, with distribution determining which assistants reach scale.

Opening access for developers to build Muse connectors. You bring the API — Muse brings the agent, the browser, and the context of what the person actually wants. People reach your service just by asking for it, and their agent takes it from there. New connectors are live today. …

People called me crazy when I said @Muse would surpass ChatGPT as the most downloaded app in the App Store. It only took one week. $META is just getting started.

Been running Muse and Instinct regularly for a few days, and I think the only diff is Muse is smoother, faster, better UX, and available in more places, but Instinct is more proactive, and goes a tiny bit deeper.

Regardless of what ends up happening, the fact Meta is in the mix 4 years post-ChatGPT while Google, Microsoft, and Apple are not shows you the importance of founders. The first two had insane advantages comparatively and are now increasingly irrelevant. All hail Zuck.

Muse is now number 1 in the ENTIRE Apple App Store... This is a smash hit success. OpenAI has a $1T valuation due to ChatGPT how much would you say Muse is worth. Even if it's conservative Meta $META at not even $1.8T looks cheap. NFA.

Muse connectors could become the first real App Store of the Al era. 💙 If tons of consumers already have an agent, connecting your service instantly puts it in front of all of them. It won't require new apps to download or interfaces to learn. It will just connect.

I just read what Zuck wrote about Muse connectors. A few things I think this means: 1. We're witnessing the agentification of consumer apps. 2. Zuck believes Muse reaching 100M+ users feels entirely possible. 3. Whoever you connect to becomes your new landlord, so pick carefully.…
