Anthropic says Claude “leads” 26% of its AI R&D work, up from 1% in March, and “collaborates” on 90%+, doing “large chunks of work under close human direction”

More than a quarter of Anthropic PBC's research and development work for artificial intelligence …

Bloomberg Shirin Ghaffary

Context & Ripple Effects

Anthropic had already described Claude as producing more than 80% of code merged into its codebase in June, while its 2025 account of multi-agent Claude Research emphasized gains over single-agent approaches. The new measurement extends that story from code contribution to ownership of defined R&D tasks.

The shift also gives operational meaning to Claude Code’s emergence as a major AI coding product and to Anthropic’s small Labs incubator for flagship products. Anthropic is presenting AI-assisted development as a managed production process, with humans retaining close direction over substantial model-generated work.

First-order effects

  • Anthropic can assign Claude larger R&D work packages under human direction, shifting researchers’ immediate work toward task definition, review, and oversight rather than executing every component.
  • Anthropic’s disclosed lead-rate metric gives its management a concrete way to track automation across R&D alongside agent oversight and compute allocation.

Second-order effects

  • Other frontier labs face greater pressure to distinguish between AI assistance and AI-led task execution if customers, investors, or policymakers compare development practices.
  • Demand shifts toward the complementary systems that make delegated work usable at scale: agent orchestration, evaluation, monitoring, and human review workflows.

Third-order effects

  • If lead-rate reporting becomes a common frontier-lab metric, AI R&D competition will increasingly turn on the ability to safely supervise automated research pipelines, not only on model capability.
  • The boundary between an AI tool and an AI development worker becomes more consequential for governance as labs allocate compute and accountability across long-lived agent systems.

The trend: Frontier labs are industrializing model development by moving from AI-assisted coding toward measured, human-supervised delegation of broader R&D work.

claude now leads 26% of all anthropic's AI research & development up from 1% just 7 months ago... continuation at this rate would put this at 50% by early 2027

Anthropic really wants everyone to slow down and for the first time, they are being transparent about just how fast AI development is moving according to them, claude now “leads
  • @eliebakouch Elie on x
interesting that openai gives us the breakdown of usage per R&D task, and anthropic gives us automation levels (both from the same @EpochAIResearch article!!) would be great to combine both and get the evolution of automation per R&D task! the compute allocation part is also very…

for the first time ever, Anthropic opened the doors and showed how fast AI is actually building itself and it's a lot: AI already runs 26% of the work that builds their next models, up from under 1% in February and could hit 80% by the end of the year. around 30,000 AI agents are…

pretty insane data from Anthropic Claude now leads 26% of model R&D work at Anthropic, up from just 1% in March. 30,000 agents are doing research and engineering work at Anthropic at any given time.

anthropic estimates claude went from leading <1% of its AI R&D in february to 26% in august. I won't be surprised by end of year Its around 70%.

Anthropic reports that Claude went from ‘leading’ 0% of AI model R&D work in February '26 to 26% in August '26. At that rate, Claude will lead 100% of R&D work by Feb. '28. RSI is very close. Things are accelerating much faster than the most bullish thought.
  • @natolambert Nathan Lambert on x
I don't think this really answers the question of what is happening in “RSI”. Says Claude “leads” 26% of Anthropic's AI R&D work, but doesn't define what falls in scope of AI R&D work. I'm not satisfied by this, but it's a step in the right transparency direction.

Wow Anthropic is being really transparent with how close to RSI they are - 26% of Anthropic's AI R&D work," while “the share of work at or above ‘AI collaborates’ is above 90%.

in the early days of @AnthropicAI so much had to be done from scratch it's a miracle the company exists at all however, now, so much is off the shelf entirely new rates of frontier progress are now within reach for new labs all you need is the right mindset

Inside Anthropic 26% of its AI R&D work has reached the point where Claude can do most of the task end-to-end from a high-level instruction. A human mainly supervises. -

Total unscientific nonsense spread via the media as a means of pretending they are doing some bastardized form of recursive self-improvement.  Takes a lot to make me dislike a company more than OpenAI but Dario truly has taken the lead [embedded post]

AI systems are getting more powerful, and they're increasingly being used to build the next version of themselves.  We want to illuminate that progress for the public.  Today, we're sharing three measurements that help track AI development: 1.  How much AI R&D is done by AI.  2. …

Anthropic has added another ad-hoc contribution to Pacing. We should recognize the reality that we are already pacing, just poorly and unstructured-ly! I think we can do better! And to get at that, let me talk about something near and dear to me as a former NYC quant trader. (I p…
