Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork, and adds a feature for making presentations and documents, rolling out to Pro and Max plans first

Anthropic is merging its front-end for Claude chat and Cowork, making it less confusing for people to decide which tab to use for different tasks.

TechCrunch Ivan Mehta

Context & Ripple Effects

Cowork moved from a research preview to all paid plans in April, then reached web and mobile in a Max beta in July; Anthropic said more than 90% of its usage was unrelated to software development. That expansion made separate chat and task-oriented entry points increasingly hard to justify for general workplace use.

Anthropic had already combined the memory systems behind chat and Cowork in August. Folding the interfaces together extends that integration to the user experience, while document and presentation creation turns the unified Claude surface into a destination for producing work outputs.

First-order effects

  • Pro and Max subscribers get one Claude interface for conversational work, Cowork-style tasks, and creating documents or presentations, reducing the need to choose a mode before starting.
  • Anthropic makes Docs and Slides-style output an early paid-plan capability, giving its higher-tier subscribers a more complete work-creation workflow.

Second-order effects

  • The unified surface makes Claude’s paid offering easier to position around completed workplace outputs rather than distinct chat and agent products, increasing the value of the Pro and Max subscriptions.
  • Users whose work begins in chat can move into document or presentation creation without switching interfaces, concentrating more of their workflow and prior context inside Claude.

Third-order effects

  • If this product direction holds, AI assistants will increasingly compete as consolidated work surfaces that combine conversation, task execution, memory, and finished artifacts rather than as separate specialist tools.
  • Subscription tiers are likely to become the main mechanism for sequencing access to higher-value creation and agentic features as assistants broaden beyond technical use cases.

The trend: Anthropic is part of a shift toward the AI assistant as a unified workplace surface, where chat, agentic execution, and content creation share one interface and memory layer.

Today, we are merging Claude Cowork and chat to simplify how you use Claude! We are also integrating Claude Design so that you can ask Claude to make a Slide, Design, or Doc without needing to switch tabs or apps. Many of you shared that you didn't want to choose which Claude pro…

FINALLY. It has never been particularly intuitive to explain the difference between chat, Cowork, and Code to most individuals new to the platform, and especially non-technical users. Major step forward.

Chat and Cowork being separate was an anti-pattern I'm glad to see the Claude team simplify it! I hope OpenAI also simplifies Chat, Work, and Codex soon. Tabs is the new hamburger menu.

As someone who was just defaulting to cowork for everything I'm glad to give my Claude a break and no longer asking things like this in Cowork. One Claude!!

Today, we're combining Cowork and Chat into one Claude. You can fire off questions and then turn to serious work in the same conversation. When your computer is open, Claude can use your local files and apps - and if you close it, Claude will keep working with its own computer in…

Also today: Claude Docs, Claude Slides, and Claude Design are in every conversation. Ask Claude for a presentation and you get one you can open, edit, and export as PowerPoint or PDF. Same for a document or a design. There's no separate tool to navigate to. They're just in the ch…

Claude Code showed that AI could do real work, not just answer questions. Developers hand Claude a feature, come back to shipped code. That's where much of the industry's serious engineering runs now. Cowork proved knowledge workers could do the same: hand Claude the brief, come …

Absolutely the right call. The vast majority of users I have discussed Claude with had no idea what co-work was or why to use it. The gulf between the capability of a properly set up co-work instance and a chat is ridiculously vast.

Echoes of OpenAI renaming the Codex desktop app to “ChatGPT” here - everyone's racing to establish themselves as a general agent now

Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. Ask a quick question or hand over a report, and Claude takes it from there, even after you close your laptop. If something's unclear, Claude asks—you keep the final say. Rolling out to Pro and Max over the next few weeks.

We've been closing the gaps for features in Claude Code on desktop, making sure everything is a callable tool for Claude. Glad tool calling has improved so much.
