Pulley, which offers cap table management software, says it will cease operations after December 8; it had raised $50M+ from investors, including Founders Fund

Pulley, a software that startups rely on to track their funding, is shutting down after seven years.

Business Insider Melia Robinson

Context & Ripple Effects

Pulley’s financing arc ran from a Stripe-led $10 million Series A in 2020 to a $40 million Founders Fund-led Series B in 2022. Its planned December closure leaves a product built to challenge Carta exiting despite that backing.

The corpus also includes ScaleFactor’s financial-software shutdown, though that company cited COVID-19’s effect on sales; the shared lesson is that substantial fundraising does not ensure continuity for operational SaaS customers.

First-order effects

  • Pulley customers must move or preserve cap-table records and related workflows before the company ceases operations after December 8.
  • Carta loses a named challenger in cap-table management, while Pulley’s investors face the end of an investment that raised more than $50 million.

Second-order effects

  • Carta and other cap-table providers gain an opportunity to win migrating Pulley accounts, making migration support and record portability more consequential sales tools.
  • Startups using specialized finance software have a stronger incentive to assess export options and vendor-continuity risk alongside product features.

Third-order effects

  • If comparable exits persist, cap-table software may consolidate around providers that can pair core recordkeeping with durable customer support and migration assurances.
  • The episode raises the strategic value of portable ownership data: buyers may treat the ability to leave a vendor as a procurement requirement rather than a technical detail.

The trend: Cap-table management is becoming a more consolidation-prone SaaS category, with customer trust increasingly tied to data portability and vendor durability.

as a pulley customer, sad to see this from founders for founders: we built https://capyinc.com/ to handle your cap table mcp first, self hosted and fairly priced let your ai agents issue SAFEs and grants, and get back to building

Competing with @yinyinwu and Pulley made the startup team at Carta better. Respect to them for what they built 🙏

Pulley was one of our first customers at Taxwire. I was lucky to speak at their team offsite last year and meet many of the folks on their team IRL. Great company. Great product. We have been a happy customer ourselves of the cap table product. They were a good thing for the ecos…

Kind of wild @pulley ultimately shut down given that @stripe led their A and was a big shareholder. Feels like Stripe could have easily bought it for a nominal amount (compared to their market cap) and merged it with their Stripe @atlas offering.

Crazy. @pulley closing down out of the blue.

Wow, sad day. Pulley is shutting down, looks like Carta is picking up the business / referral engine. As a former-AngelList-er, I still do not grok how these businesses run unprofitably and have high hopes for a new entrant who will take down the cap table giants

Completely surprised that @pulley is shutting down. It's a great product and business, I've had nothing but quality interactions with their team. No details as to why and no acquisition mentioned. So curious to know more.

Pulley is winding down operations today.  We are working with Carta to transition Pulley customers to their platform. …

Dang, I actually kind of preferred Pulley. But bigger question to be had... why can't the current startup ecosystem support a second cap table management option?
