AI researcher Jacob Coxon says he quit Anthropic after four months, two months before his equity would have vested; he still has equity in prior employer OpenAI
Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon quit his job due to concerns about the safety of AI two months before his equity would have vested, he told Axios.
Axios Madison Mills
Context & Ripple Effects
Coxon’s departure follows his public argument that AI companies are racing toward systems they may not control, and his call for industry-wide international coordination on recursive self-improvement. His decision to leave before Anthropic equity vested makes the stated safety objection a concrete employment trade-off rather than only a public critique.
The episode also lands after 2024 reporting on OpenAI’s restrictive employee off-boarding terms, which put equity and workers’ ability to speak publicly into the governance debate. Coxon’s continued OpenAI equity separates his Anthropic exit from a complete financial break with frontier-AI employers.
First-order effects
- Anthropic loses a researcher who has publicly tied his exit to AI-safety concerns, while Coxon forfeits the pending Anthropic equity he says would have vested two months later.
- Coxon retains equity from OpenAI, leaving him financially connected to a prior frontier-AI employer despite leaving Anthropic and the industry.
Second-order effects
- For Anthropic, the forfeited award makes equity vesting a visible part of the retention calculus for safety researchers whose concerns conflict with an employer’s development pace.
- OpenAI’s earlier off-boarding controversy and Coxon’s departure give prospective frontier-lab employees a sharper comparison point between compensation incentives and their ability to exit or criticize company practice.
Third-order effects
- If prominent safety staff keep treating departure as the credible response to unresolved risk concerns, frontier labs’ safety claims will be judged increasingly through retention and employee-governance practices, not only published commitments.
- The recurring link between equity, exit terms, and public dissent points toward AI governance becoming an employment-structure issue as well as a technical and policy issue.
The trend: Frontier-AI governance is expanding from model-safety research into the incentives and exit conditions governing the people asked to conduct it.

Maybe we need to focus on this: “Coxon is one of now several people who have seen AI's peak capabilities up close — and are warning that what they saw could end humanity as we know it.” — www.axios.com/2026/09/09/a...

Former OpenAI and Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who publicly resigned from Anthropic yesterday with a stark warning about AI safety, was interviewed by Anderson Cooper on his show this evening.

This is why it's a good thing that American labs are in the lead. If Chinese labs were, their employees wouldn't be able to warn us about threats. But Chinese labs will encounter the same threats within a year, in complete silence.

A lot of otherwise smart people on Twitter seem 100% convinced AI risks are all fake and stupid and part of some marketing ploy. What is surprising is that some of these people seemingly also believe that AI's positive uses are on an incredible trajectory of increasing capability…

Shame. Such a horrible take, given the open spirit in which Chinese AI labs operate, sharing their knowledge and advancing scientific knowledge of the world. Xenophobia and ethnic stereotypes will destroy the world more surely than AI.

Not to my knowledge (not sure whether that's because similar attacks haven't happened or because they weren't disclosed). I'm also not sure how open American frontier labs would have been if HF hadn't disclosed first. We're now learning about cyberattacks from months ago that wer…

Finally, the truth is out. Anthropic wants an antitrust exemption so it can collude with OpenAI to deal with its burn rate.

So? I know you have more followers than me even if I don't know exactly how many followers you have, that doesn't necessarily feel like a contradiction. Anyway, if you're talking specifically about cyber-attacks, then I probably agree with you (but again, feels like it's mostly b…

one recurring theme in the coverage of this AI Anthropic doomsday newscycle is nobody actually has any REAL ideas of what to do — just a lot of ambiguous hand-waving in a country that's too corrupt to have working regulators, by a press that doesn't realize that's a central pil…

not trying to make fun of this guy because i think he's sincere and it's reasonable to float concerns about AI, but in this case the AI better have a survival strategy for not having people around to, like, fix the pipes in the data center www.wired.com/story/anthro... [image]

I think there's an arrogance to assuming we're at the Manhattan project yet; I think we're at the era where alchemists became chemists, we're discovering mustard gas and fertilizer. Slow, painful, traumatic death, not quite nuclear Holocaust [embedded post]

Sorry, but asking Jacob about AI extinction risk is like asking your AC guy about climate change. Not saying it's necessarily uninteresting or wrong per se but let's keep things in perspective and hear from the full range of expertise across the ecosystem!
