OpenAI says it will pause new $200/month ChatGPT Pro subscriptions amid “unprecedented” Astra demand; existing accounts, other plans, and the API are unaffected

To make sure our current users have an incredible experience and continued access to Astra, we are going to pause subscriptions to our $200 Pro plan. These put the most strain on our systems and we wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible. All ...

Context & Ripple Effects

Astra was rolled out across ChatGPT’s paid and business tiers, Codex, and the API on September 5, following an August move to restore five-hour limits for Plus users to smooth compute load. The Pro intake pause keeps API and lower-priced plan access open while reserving a constrained premium tier for its existing subscribers.

OpenAI has used access controls during demand spikes before: it paused new Plus signups in 2023 after usage exceeded capacity. The recurrence makes subscription availability part of operating capacity management, rather than a purely commercial decision.

First-order effects

  • Prospective $200-per-month Pro customers cannot open new subscriptions, while existing Pro accounts retain access and OpenAI leaves other ChatGPT plans and the API available.
  • OpenAI reduces the incremental load from the plan it says places the greatest strain on its systems, prioritizing continuity for its present user base.

Second-order effects

  • OpenAI’s paid acquisition mix shifts toward plans and API access that remain open, making plan eligibility an immediate constraint on how new high-demand users enter the product.
  • The Astra launch is no longer just a feature-distribution event: OpenAI must balance access across consumer, business, Codex, and API channels that received the model.

Third-order effects

  • Repeated signup pauses and usage limits point to frontier-model access being governed by capacity controls embedded in tiers, limits, and enrollment rules.
  • If demand continues to outpace available capacity, premium pricing alone will not determine access; providers will need to treat entitlement design as a core compute-allocation mechanism.

The trend: Frontier AI providers are turning subscription tiers and usage limits into operational tools for allocating scarce model capacity.

Demand for Astra is really unprecedented. We're pulling all the levers possible to sustain the demand, but I've not seen anything like it until now and we went through very steep growth before. Priority will always be to keep excellent service for existing users, but we might hav…

@thsottiaux So not only is Astra slower, it's also dumber, AND you can't get a new Pro plan anymore Yikes
  • @kimmonismus @kimmonismus on x
Okay, that's crazy. OpenAI actually paused its $200 subscription plan because GPT-6 Astra is such a huge success. What a year for OpenAI

One of the fastest-growing companies in history, with many tens of billions in revenue, says it's never seen demand like this. OpenAI may need to pause new paid sign-ups. Wild.

We're pausing new $200 Pro signups to keep Astra running well for existing users. All other plans + the API remain available.

Huh, guess I was wrong and they did actually have capacity issues. This is kind of remarkable! OpenAI might actually be running out of compute. Question is how much more comes online in the future and when

The era of subsidized tokens is ending. Prepare accordingly.

You know a company isn't lying about demand when they literally have to pause their top tier subscription.

congrats on being grandfathered into the permanent upper class

OpenAI is officially cutting off new ChatGPT Pro Subscriptions. At first I was shocked, but now I am worried. Without the ability to purchase new subscriptions I am now completely constrained to the OpenAI usage limits (which are horrible). This is not good.

OpenAI has taken 31% of all dollars spent over the past 48 hours across OpenRouter. - new peak. They hit 28% in a few days in July, but people clearly love Astra
