Mistral raised a €3B Series D led by Samsung at a ~€21B valuation, up from €11.7B in September 2025, as it expands from developing AI models into data centers

New York Times Adam Satariano

Context & Ripple Effects

Mistral’s financing has accelerated from its €600M Series B at a €5.8B valuation in 2024 to a €1.7B Series C led by ASML at €11.7B in September 2025. Reports in June had already placed a new round near €3B and a €20B valuation, framing the close as execution of an anticipated capital step rather than an isolated jump.

Samsung’s lead investment pairs Mistral’s model business with an explicit move into data centers. The breadth of same-day coverage—from Mistral, Samsung, and international business outlets—also makes the round a prominent test of whether a European AI company can finance both models and underlying infrastructure.

First-order effects

  • Mistral gains €3B to fund its expansion from model development into data centers, while its roughly €21B valuation resets the company’s financing base above its September 2025 level.
  • Samsung becomes the lead backer in Mistral’s Series D, tying its investment to a strategic partnership described by Samsung as intelligence-driven semiconductor infrastructure.

Second-order effects

  • Mistral’s shift toward data centers makes access to compute infrastructure a central competitive requirement alongside model development, raising the capital threshold for AI labs pursuing a similar stack.
  • Samsung gains a high-profile AI customer and partner as Mistral deploys infrastructure, reinforcing the link between semiconductor suppliers and the labs financing large-scale compute.

Third-order effects

  • The round points toward a financeable AI-factory model in which leading labs combine model work, infrastructure ownership or operation, and strategic hardware capital rather than relying on model development alone.
  • If this funding pattern persists, AI-lab competition will concentrate further among companies able to secure multibillion-euro rounds and supplier partnerships for compute buildouts.

The trend: AI labs are evolving into capital-intensive infrastructure businesses, with hardware partners financing the compute layer as well as the models.

Today marks a major step for Mistral: we're announcing a €3B Series D, the largest equity round ever raised by a European tech company, just three years after launch.

Congrats to Mistral but also $3b is the largest equity round ever raised by a European tech company? My lord.

People who dunk on Mistral's fundraise have no idea that although it's not a frontier lab, it has pivoted to becoming an enterprise AI deploy co with an effective monopoly on European enterprises and government agencies. Name me a tougher moat than the EU regulatory system.

very good news btw, a lot of backing by EU actors here hope this will lead to more focus on frontier model development and infra 🙏

Bravo to Mistral! So great to see them killing it, they are an inspiration to everyone as we need more sovereign & open-source AI everywhere around the world. Excited to keep supporting them on https://huggingface.co/...!

We led the first cheque into Mistral three years ago. Plenty of people told me privately (and a few publicly) it was a mistake. €3B Series D later, largest European tech round ever. But more importantly, they're building an incredible business and are still just getting started. …

We've just raised 3B€ to scale our training and inference compute, and make open and sovereign AI the technology frontier. Grateful to everyone who got us there, excited by the fight ahead https://mistral.ai/...

“Just 3 years after launch” It's also been 3 years since they had a model worth looking at for any reason at all

2 yrs ago, @arthurmensch and I shook on @MistralAI's series A at a $2B post and i joined the board to accelerate the mission of open model research today, @MistralAI closed its $3B+ series D on a $24B post, the largest European equity raise ever

Led by @Samsung, co-led by @eqt's Scaleup Europe Fund and @PSG_equity, with continued backing from @ASMLcompany, @nvidia, @BNPParibas CIB and others. This fuels our infrastructure and product capabilities, and deployment at scale. But most importantly, it allows us to continue an…

Our open-weight models, products and infrastructure give organisations a real choice over how and where they run AI, not just access to a model. That's frontier performance without the lock-in. Full story here: https://mistral.ai/...

Notable in the release: “The round will significantly expand Mistral's frontier research, which is the foundation underpinning its infrastructure, products and sovereignty.”

Mistral just raised €3B Series D — biggest equity raise a European tech company has done, three years after launch. • Post-money over €21B (their blog) • Samsung led; Scaleup Europe Fund + PSG Equity co-led • Money for frontier research, training compute, and the open-weight stac…

We just raised €3B at a €21B valuation (Series D). What I am most excited about is that this means more compute, better models, and we get to keep the weights open so companies can actually run this on their own machines. Really glad to be here for it. more soon!!

Three years ago, we started Mistral with a simple belief that organisations should not have to choose between frontier AI performance and control over how that technology is deployed. …
