Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon says he is quitting the AI industry over fears that tech companies are racing to build systems they won't be able to control
Concerns are rising inside AI labs that competition is pushing tech companies to race toward self-improving models that risk spiraling out of human control
Wall Street Journal Amrith Ramkumar
Context & Ripple Effects
Anthropic had already urged leading labs to consider a slowdown or temporary pause in development as self-improving systems approach greater societal risk. Coxon’s departure turns that institutional warning into a public critique from a researcher who says competitive pressure is overriding responsible development.
The resignation also sharpens Anthropic’s pre-existing tension between its safety-oriented identity and the demands of commercial competition, documented in coverage of the lab caught between being safe, fast, rigorous, and commercially successful. Public reaction amplified the warning, though the most extreme risk estimates circulating in discussion are individual opinions rather than established findings.
First-order effects
- Jacob Coxon exits the AI industry, depriving Anthropic of a pretraining researcher while making the control-risk dispute a public issue for Anthropic and rival frontier labs.
- Anthropic and other AI labs face more direct scrutiny over whether their safety commitments can constrain development schedules amid competition.
Second-order effects
- Calls for a development slowdown gain a prominent internal example, increasing pressure on labs to explain how they evaluate and govern self-improving-model risks.
- The episode raises the reputational cost for partners, founders, and researchers deciding whether to align with Anthropic as it balances guardrails against competitive demands.
Third-order effects
- If departures and public dissent continue, frontier AI governance may move from voluntary lab commitments toward stronger external oversight of development and deployment decisions.
- The dispute reinforces a concentration dilemma: risk arguments can support tighter controls, while tighter controls may leave greater authority with a small group of powerful AI operators, as Sam Altman warned in August.
The trend: Frontier AI competition is making the credibility of lab-led safety governance a central test of how increasingly capable systems are developed.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

To be clear, as we say in our latest Risk Report ( https://x.com/...), I think the risk from present models is low. What I am worried about is superintelligence arising from recursive self-improvement, as we have said is happening faster than we thought (https://x.com/...).

We need a national or better a global commission on AI risk. Like TODAY. If there is a 1% chance of escape qnd human extinction - and the people involved say the risk is higher than that - these companies are killing 80 million people. No economic gain is worth that gamble.

This being viewed ~100M times is really remarkable and imo net bad. I take AI safety seriously and think we have a lot of challenges ahead, but am still waiting for evidence that supports anything close to a 10% chance of human extinction. Without it, it is fearmongering.
