AI coding startup Cognition raised $2B at a $48B valuation, up from $26B in May, and says its run-rate revenue grew from $492M in May to ~$900M

Bloomberg Samantha Oltman

Context & Ripple Effects

Cognition’s financing trajectory had already accelerated from a 2025 round valuing it at $9.8 billion to its more than $1 billion May raise at a $26 billion valuation. Investor discussions reported in August and early September anticipated another sharply higher-priced round, including a reported $47 billion valuation target.

The company also acquired Poke’s parent company in July and released its SWE-1.7 model that month, pairing fundraising momentum with product and acquisition activity. Cognition says its revenue run rate rose from $492 million in May to about $900 million in this round.

First-order effects

  • Cognition receives $2 billion of fresh capital and resets its private-market valuation at $48 billion, giving it substantially more financial capacity than it had after the May round.
  • Cognition’s disclosed revenue-run-rate growth becomes central evidence for investors assessing whether its valuation increase is supported by commercial adoption rather than financing momentum alone.

Second-order effects

  • The rapid repricing raises the performance bar for other AI coding vendors seeking capital: investors have a prominent new benchmark tying late-stage valuation to reported revenue scale.
  • Cognition’s backers, including a16z, Accel, Founders Fund, General Catalyst and Avenir according to the company, concentrate more capital behind one vendor’s approach to AI software creation.

Third-order effects

  • If comparable revenue growth proves repeatable, AI coding is likely to be financed less as a model demonstration market and more as enterprise software infrastructure, with capital favoring vendors that can convert agent usage into recurring revenue.
  • The widening gap between well-funded AI coding platforms and earlier-stage entrants may make distribution, customer trust and cost per useful task as consequential as model capability.

The trend: AI coding is moving into a scale-up phase in which revenue growth and access to large late-stage financing increasingly determine which agent platforms can compete for enterprise adoption.

The world needs far more software than it can build. Cognition exists to change that. We've just raised over $2B at a $48B valuation, led by a16z, Accel, Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir. Since our round in May, run-rate revenue has grown from $492 M to almost $900 M.

Congrats, guys! We led Cognition's previous round from @8VC at 25B, three months ago. Of course, in AI world, that's like over a year ago. Just amazing progress. Scott and team are hiring the world's top talent, and building a trillion $+ co that's helping the world to build.
