Analysis of LG's smart TVs shows its ad software tracks nearby devices, security flaws can allow hackers to eavesdrop via the built-in microphone, and more

SUPPORT THE DATA DRAGNET SERIES: https://store.gamersnexus.net/data- dragnetThe LG Smart TVs we've tested have first-party ACR (automatic content recognition)...

Context & Ripple Effects

LG’s television data practices were already under scrutiny in 2013, when reporting found USB filenames and viewing information being sent to LG servers, followed days later by LG’s pledge to halt the spying behavior. The new analysis tests whether the privacy boundary has narrowed as televisions have become more software- and advertising-driven.

The issue also fits a broader connected-TV pattern: 2015 coverage raised concerns about unencrypted voice data on Samsung sets, and 2019 researchers reported data sharing across smart TVs and streaming devices from multiple vendors. The combination of ACR, local-device tracking, and microphone-related flaws makes privacy design and product security inseparable for LG Smart TVs.

First-order effects

  • Owners of the tested LG Smart TVs face both first-party ACR and nearby-device tracking by the television’s ad software, expanding the data the set can associate with household activity.
  • The reported microphone vulnerabilities create a separate security exposure: an attacker exploiting the flaws could use the built-in microphone to eavesdrop.

Second-order effects

  • LG must address two linked problems at once—data-collection controls and microphone security—rather than treating advertising software and device security as separate product layers.
  • Other smart-TV and streaming-device vendors face stronger scrutiny of how their telemetry, voice features, and network-facing software handle household data, following the earlier cross-platform smart-TV data-sharing findings.

Third-order effects

  • If similar findings persist across connected-TV platforms, consumer privacy competition will increasingly turn on enforceable controls over sensors, ACR, and local-network discovery—not only picture quality and streaming catalogs.
  • The pattern points toward smart-TV governance in which advertising-data practices are evaluated alongside vulnerability management, because either layer can expose activity inside the home.

The trend: Connected TVs are becoming household data platforms whose advertising telemetry and embedded-device security must be assessed as one privacy risk surface.
