Huawei unveils the Mate XT 2, a trifold phone powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro, an in-house designed chipset that it says is entirely free from US restrictions

TAIPEI — China's Huawei Technologies has unveiled its first triple-folding smartphone powered by chips that it says are free …

Nikkei Asia

Context & Ripple Effects

Huawei has been building toward a vertically integrated premium-phone stack: its 2023 Mate 60 Pro+ and Mate X5 were reported to use the Kirin 9000S, while the 2024 Mate 70 paired flagship hardware with HarmonyOS Next amid U.S. chip curbs.

The Mate XT 2 is an iteration of Huawei's tri-fold line rather than a new category debut. The first Mate XT reached global markets in 2025 after its China launch, extending the company's earlier tri-foldable push beyond China; the new handset makes the in-house-chip claim central to that strategy.

First-order effects

  • Huawei can use the Mate XT 2 as a flagship showcase for its claim that the Kirin 9050 Pro is designed in-house and free from U.S. restrictions.
  • The launch renews Huawei's premium tri-fold portfolio, following the 2024 Mate XT introduction and its multi-format folding display.

Second-order effects

  • Huawei's chip claim shifts attention from the novelty of a tri-fold screen to whether it can pair distinctive hardware with an internally designed processor under the constraints that shaped its recent flagship launches.
  • The 2024 Mate XT faced analyst supply concerns, so a second tri-fold model raises the importance of component availability and production execution for Huawei's premium-device strategy.

Third-order effects

  • If Huawei can repeat the pairing of proprietary silicon, its own software and differentiated foldable hardware, the company gains a more self-contained path for premium smartphones under U.S. restrictions.
  • The wider signal is that handset differentiation is moving beyond screens and cameras toward control of the silicon-and-software stack, though Huawei's restriction-free claim is its own assertion.

The trend: Huawei is pursuing premium smartphone differentiation through a combined stack of proprietary chips, software and unconventional foldable hardware amid U.S. chip restrictions.

I'm bearish on Huawei due to the fact that they intend to NOT use LogicFolding in datacenter NPUs until 2030s. Why? The way things are going, EDA should improve enormously by H2 2027 already. Imo, only physical capex like fabs is inertial enough to allow 5-year conservatism.

Huawei's first tri-fold was cool and a little scary. Part of the screen sat on the outside. One drop and you were done. The Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design fixes that! The camera sits in the middle now. You fold the right side in, then the left. When it's closed, the big screen …
