Memo: Uber is cutting ~3,300 jobs, or 10% of its staff globally, to reduce management layers and reallocate spending into ridesharing, delivery, and robotaxis

Uber Technologies Inc. is cutting about 3,300 roles, or 10% of its staff globally, in a massive restructuring aimed …

Bloomberg Natalie Lung

Context & Ripple Effects

Uber has used workforce reductions to simplify operations before: it cut roughly 400 marketing roles in 2019 and announced a 3,700-person workforce reduction in May 2020, followed by further cuts and office closures. The 2026 plan reprises that organizational playbook, but explicitly ties the savings to its core marketplaces and autonomous-service effort.

The refocus also sits alongside a broader operations review that includes planned exits from Nigeria and Uganda. Uber’s robotaxi ambitions remain operationally bounded: its London service begins with human safety drivers and its U.S. alignment with drivers’ unions calls for a slower rollout.

First-order effects

  • About 3,300 Uber employees are directly affected as the company removes management layers and concentrates internal spending on ridesharing, delivery, and robotaxis.
  • Uber’s business-unit leaders gain a clearer capital-allocation mandate, while functions outside those priorities face a smaller role in the company’s operating structure.

Second-order effects

  • The ridesharing, delivery, and robotaxi organizations will compete less with corporate overhead for resources, making execution in those three areas the test of the restructuring.
  • Robotaxi investment does not eliminate deployment constraints: Uber’s U.S. arrangement with drivers’ unions slows rollout, while its London service still uses human safety drivers and Wayve technology.

Third-order effects

  • If the allocation holds, Uber’s corporate structure shifts toward a leaner central organization supporting a smaller set of marketplace and autonomous-service bets rather than a broad global operating footprint.
  • The robotaxi strategy points to an operating model in which Uber supplies the customer platform and deployment layer while autonomous-driving partners provide core vehicle technology.

The trend: Uber is concentrating a global mobility platform around core marketplace businesses while treating autonomous services as a capital priority constrained by deployment partnerships and labor agreements.

Recently met up w old Uber colleagues. What they told me is inside of Uber, there's been an effort for months to push out long-tenured engineers + managers. HR called a meeting, said “we'd like you to leave, here's a nice package.

Uber's layoff PR is wild. Yes, let's justify the layoff, in part, due to feedback from the employees themselves!! > In Pulse surveys and conversations with many of you, we've heard that too much work requires coordination across teams, debates take too long, and decision-making r…

“Why push out tenured folks?” I only have speculation. With that caveat, here are things we talked about in this group, on why it could happen: Also, keep in mind that these folks do/did get more generous parting offers than most during a layoff https://x.com/...

(All of them rejected it at first, then negotiated, got a better package, took it. I have a small sample size tho. But when a company makes it clear they'd rather you out then in, despite tenure, usually little reason to stay)

Ok, THIS is wild, never expected anything like this: Uber exited Nigeria... no warning, just shut down the app, on the spot. When riders were mid-trip ?!! This is what a startup that just went bankrupt would do, not a $150B corporation. Uber operated in Nigeria since 2014 (!!)

I don't know if your work is the exonerate the government from all blames all the time. It's “us” problem and not Tinubu's government problem. The question you should ask yourself is why drivers in other countries not doing same. Well done Akin.

Hhaaaaaaaa....I was reading this and it's exactly what the problem is with Uber as most drivers try to go offline after picking up riders but you thinking and saying that the circumvention is not due to the economy or the Tinubu policies will be the most funny thing I've ever rea…

Exiting a market is understandable and Uber has done it many times before. Each time, it gave a few weeks of heads up, then shut down, paid drivers + offboarded, closed operations No idea why it would not follow the “usual” playbook Suggests it will never go back

Uber leaving Nigeria (and Uganda simultaneously) isn't a local policy issue, it's a global tech corporate restructuring. Uber pulled out of Uganda on the exact same day which is today, 2nd September 2026. Uber is cutting almost 3,300 jobs globally to fund a massive pivot toward a…

Uber @uberng is gone from Nigeria after 12 years. I am not surprised. This market punishes platforms that assume trust. The company built the marketplace, while the driver shows up and asks the rider to go offline, keeping the full fare. Zero work locating the passenger! 100% of …
