Gluing Together the Best Content on the Web

You may have heard about our experimental visual display of search results on Yahoo! India, called Glue™ Pages.  Tonight we're launching a similar, but slightly different experience in the U.S. with Yahoo! Glue™ beta.

Yahoo! Search Blog

Context & Ripple Effects

Yahoo had already tested Glue Pages in India and is extending the experiment to the U.S. as a beta. The move gives Yahoo a distinct way to package search around assembled topical material rather than a conventional results list.

The launch follows the end of Yahoo's search partnership with Google, making product-level differentiation in Yahoo's own search experience more consequential.

First-order effects

  • U.S. Yahoo search users gain an experimental visual results surface that brings together third-party content around a topic.
  • Yahoo gains a live U.S. test bed for whether curated, topic-oriented search pages can differentiate its search product.

Second-order effects

  • The end of the Google partnership raises the value of Yahoo's own interface and aggregation choices, because Yahoo must compete through experiences it controls directly.
  • Sites represented in Glue Pages can gain another route into Yahoo search discovery, while Yahoo becomes more responsible for how outside material is selected and presented.

Third-order effects

  • If users favor assembled topic pages, search competition shifts from ranking individual links toward designing the layer that organizes web content for a query.
  • That model concentrates influence in the search interface: the service that groups and frames third-party material can shape which sources receive attention.

The trend: Search is evolving from a list of ranked destinations toward an answer layer that aggregates and organizes material from across the web.
