Z.ai says it tested GLM-5.3-Flash anonymously as Ox Alpha on OpenCode and OpenRouter, with all traffic served on Chinese AI chips, and releases its weights

Luz Ding /Bloomberg:

Bloomberg Luz Ding

Context & Ripple Effects

Z.ai has used masked marketplace launches before: a February report linked Pony Alpha on OpenRouter to GLM-5. On August 26, it confirmed Ox Alpha as a GLM-series model after the zero-cost endpoint topped OpenRouter’s leaderboard, turning an anonymous evaluation into an attributable release.

The lab had already established an open-release posture with GLM-5.1 under an MIT license, while saying that GLM-5.3’s most sensitive cybersecurity functions would be limited to verified users. That combination makes the disclosed serving stack consequential: weights can be broadly distributed even as access to selected functions is controlled.

First-order effects

  • Developers who tested Ox Alpha through OpenCode or OpenRouter can associate the endpoint with GLM-5.3-Flash and obtain its released weights, rather than evaluate an unidentified zero-cost model.
  • Z.ai’s claim that all test traffic ran on Chinese AI chips gives its marketplace deployment a concrete hardware provenance, while its earlier verified-user policy for sensitive cyber functions remains a separate control point.

Second-order effects

  • OpenRouter gains a stronger case as a model-launch and blinded-evaluation venue: Z.ai used its marketplace distribution to build attention before attaching its name to the model.
  • Open-weight users gain an additional deployment option, while Z.ai’s selective-access approach distinguishes broad model distribution from unrestricted access to every sensitive capability.

Third-order effects

  • Z.ai’s use of both Pony Alpha and Ox Alpha indicates that anonymous marketplace testing can become a repeatable pre-release stage between internal development and a branded model launch.
  • If open weights are paired with verified-user gates for particular functions, model openness may increasingly be separated from control over higher-risk capabilities.

The trend: The emerging model-launch playbook combines anonymous marketplace trials, open weights, and selective access controls to widen adoption without treating every capability identically.

I wonder if this will become a new standard tactic for model releases from labs that are not named openai or anthropic going forward. Seems like this model got a lot more attention than it normally would because of the mystery aspect of Ox Alpha

OX ALPHA IS A NEW GLM. now confirmed by Bloomberg. also the weights will be released tonight. so basically anyone with “insider information” claiming it WASN'T a new GLM had absolutely no insider information.

A reveal that surprised absolutely nobody, but has given Zai a lot of good will & press. Free trial to encourage greater adoption is standard marketing practice. I would not overstate “the cost

All speculations are now over regarding Ox Alpha !! Chinese company ‘Z. ai’ made Ox Alpha stealth > OxAlpha is probably GLM-5.3-Flash

They were not serving 100T tokens per day. According to OpenRouter they served a total of 23T tokens (and peaked at 10T for a single day). You can serve that from ≈1k Blackwells or 3-4k Huawei Ascend 950DTs.

People really need to start realizing just how strong @Zai_org is, the founders are Tsinghua CS profs who've been working on AI models for 20+ years To ensure you can get into Tsinghua CS, you usually need to score top 15-30ish in your whole province on the gaokao (top 0.003%)

keep your eyes open 👀 a lot of people kinda know what Ox Alpha is but i still think it'll be a surprise for most of you

So yeah, today is gonna be a big day for Chinese open source: - Ox Alpha will be officially released as an open weight model And - Qwen3.8-Flash-Next (~125B-A6B + 51B n-gram) Will be released. Good day for open source. Quo vadis, western AI? Do you want to respond to

OX ALPHA IS NOW #1 ON OPENROUTER BY TOKEN USAGE, almost 2x the #2 model. Make a model cheap enough (free, in this case), and people will use it at massive scale without knowing who made it or what the official benchmarks are. As long as it's reasonably smart.

Ox Alpha is not as good as people think...
