Users reporting failed Windows and Office validations (Updated)

According to Microsoft, the issue is not related to OGA or WGA, but strictly to offline activation, which is now available again.  Microsoft sent Ars the following statement in an e-mail:

Ars Technica Emil Protalinski

Context & Ripple Effects

Microsoft had already faced a worldwide Windows Genuine Advantage outage in 2007. Its 2008 statement instead locates the immediate disruption in offline activation and says that path is available again, while denying a connection to WGA or Office Genuine Advantage.

First-order effects

  • Windows and Office users dependent on offline activation regain a route to validate their software, reducing the immediate disruption caused by failed checks.

Second-order effects

  • Microsoft’s support and licensing teams must separate an offline-activation failure from its Genuine Advantage programs, because users have a recent outage to compare against.

Third-order effects

  • Repeated validation disruptions would make licensing availability—not merely product functionality—a material part of Windows and Office reliability for customers without dependable online activation.

The trend: Software licensing is becoming a governed capability whose reliability depends on the availability of the activation systems behind it.
