Sources: Anthropic is likely to tell IPO investors that its potential revenue opportunities are above $30T, topping SpaceX's $28.5T; Uber predicted $6T in 2019
The AI startup is likely to top SpaceX's eye-popping potential revenue estimate — SpaceX's record-breaking IPO tested the limits of an obscure financial metric.
Today's Wall Street Journal story adds the top layer of that pitch: sources say Anthropic will present "potential revenue opportunities" above $30T, topping the $28.5T SpaceX cited in its completed IPO and dwarfing Uber's $6T prediction from 2019. The figure is sourced, not confirmed, and same-day commentary — including a Barchart piece noting SpaceX shares have traded below their IPO price — shows the benchmark Anthropic is chasing already carries visible downside evidence.
First-order effects
Anthropic's bankers gain a headline number exceeding SpaceX's confirmed $28.5T to anchor the $2T-plus October float, giving order-book conversations a ceiling an order of magnitude above the company's own 2028 revenue projection.
Because the $30T figure is only "likely" per sources, whoever reviews the prospectus decides whether a metric with no accounting definition — the same obscure one SpaceX stretched — can appear in the filing at all.
Second-order effects
Same-day commentary pointing to SpaceX stock below its IPO price hands skeptical investors ready-made evidence against TAM-led AI valuations, forcing Anthropic's bankers to defend the number rather than just print it.
Any other AI lab preparing a listing must now either match the escalation on opportunity sizing or accept a smaller-sounding pitch relative to the two largest offerings ever marketed.
Third-order effects
If the pattern holds, mega-listings will compete on total-addressable-market claims rather than current financials — the Uber 2019 playbook scaled up roughly fivefold — pressing regulators toward rules for non-GAAP opportunity metrics in prospectuses.
Public markets would become the marginal funding source for the AI infrastructure buildout, tying listing valuations directly to the durability of the capex supercycle those revenues presuppose.
The trend: IPO-bound AI companies are outbidding each other on total-addressable-market math, using SpaceX's completed record offering as the yardstick for ever-larger trillion-dollar floats.
According to WSJ, Anthropic will likely tell investors that its potential revenue is above $30 trillion. https://www.wsj.com/...

$30T in revenue is more of a fun thought experiment than anything. If a corporation had current the GDP of the US in annual revenue, would the nation-state still exist? [embedded post]

It is mathematically impossible for LLM companies to turn a profit as things are currently set up. Claiming $30T in revenue opportunities for a company that has lost almost $1T is laughably stupid. — And investors will believe it, because of course they will.
