The M.T.A.'s 2007 deal with carriers to wire subway stations produced its first live service in 2011, when cellphone service reached a handful of Manhattan stations, and by January 2014 Verizon had pushed LTE into 35 stations. Gizmodo's piece explains the physical layer underneath that cadence — a dedicated facility aggregating the carrier connections feeding the platforms.
