Twitter quietly debuts new ‘Top News’ and ‘Top People’ search features

Twitter's web interface got a couple of nice new additions Wednesday, seemingly aimed at making it easier to find relevant content when conducting a search within the site.  —  For some users, Twitter's website …

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter has been rebuilding search in stages: it first surfaced popular tweets atop search results back in April 2010, then added photo results with the search+photos update in June 2011, building on the basic people-and-keyword search it launched in 2007. The quiet arrival of 'Top News' and 'Top People' modules extends that same arc from ranking individual tweets to ranking whole sources and accounts.

The timing matters because the corpus Twitter is searching is exploding: CEO Dick Costolo said at the Web 2.0 Summit in October 2011 that volume had reached 250 million tweets per day and that iOS 5 integration had tripled signup rates. Curation layers are how the company reconciles that scale with its publicly stated commitment to staying simple rather than entering a feature race.

First-order effects

  • Users searching the web interface now see pre-selected news stories and prominent accounts above the raw chronological stream, changing search from a lookup tool into a discovery page.
  • News publishers gain a new traffic surface: placement in 'Top News' becomes a distribution channel Twitter controls, alongside the engagement data it already collects through t.co link wrapping.

Second-order effects

  • Media outlets and brands now have a fresh optimization target — getting named accounts and links into the 'Top People' and 'Top News' slots — shifting some effort from follower-building toward search visibility.
  • Rival social platforms face pressure to match ranked, topic-level results inside their own search boxes, since Twitter is positioning search as a front door rather than an afterthought.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Twitter's search evolves from a chronological firehose into an algorithmically curated portal — the same structural shift general web search made years earlier, with the platform deciding which sources win attention.
  • The move tests the limits of Costolo's simplicity pledge: each curation feature adds editorial judgment to a product whose brand rests on being unfiltered, a tension that will shape how aggressively Twitter layers intelligence onto the timeline.

The trend: As tweet volume scales into the hundreds of millions per day, Twitter is converting search from a raw reverse-chronological index into a ranked discovery layer that decides which news sources and people surface first.
