Well after being under NDA for so long, I'm glad to be able to say that Amazon SimpleDB has gone into limited beta.  Congratulations to everyone on the SDS / SimpleDB team; their several years of work on SimpleDB (formerly called SDS) is a brilliant piece of engineering.

Amazon has pulled SimpleDB out of a multi-year NDA and into limited beta, capping what insiders describe as several years of work on the project under its earlier codename SDS. The launch lands alongside same-day coverage framing it two ways: GigaOM's primer on why SimpleDB matters for web infrastructure, and TechCrunch's argument that Amazon is taking aim at Oracle and IBM.

The significance is that SimpleDB completes Amazon's cloud stack: EC2 for compute and S3 for storage now gain a queryable database layer, all sold as metered infrastructure services rather than licensed software.
