Sources: Apple is cutting 200+ jobs, including ~100 positions from the Vision Pro unit and another 100 from the Siri team, as it focuses on new devices and AI

Apple Inc. is cutting jobs across teams responsible for the Siri digital assistant and the Vision Pro headset …

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple had already put Siri into remediation, planning a multi-week AI coding bootcamp for a significant share of the team after earlier moving a Siri-accuracy operation from San Diego to Austin. The new cuts show that retraining is being paired with a smaller organization.

On the Vision Pro side, related reporting says Apple is largely shutting down its gaming-focused team and shrinking immersive-video production. Together, the moves narrow work around two of Apple’s most visible newer software and device efforts while resources shift toward AI and new devices.

First-order effects

  • More than 200 Apple employees across Siri and Vision Pro are affected, with roughly 100 roles removed from each organization as Apple reallocates attention to AI and new devices.
  • Vision Pro’s gaming work is largely wound down and its immersive-video unit reduced, limiting those teams’ internal capacity alongside the reported job cuts.

Second-order effects

  • Siri’s remaining organization must absorb the AI revamp with fewer roles after Apple had already earmarked fewer than 200 developers for AI training, increasing the importance of that retrained group.
  • Developers and content partners working around Vision Pro gaming and immersive video face a smaller Apple team dedicated to those areas, while Apple’s device priorities move elsewhere.

Third-order effects

  • Apple is treating AI capability as a staffing-allocation problem as well as a product initiative: legacy assistant work is being reconfigured while discretionary Vision Pro content and gaming efforts are pared back.
  • If this allocation persists, Apple’s AI hardware strategy will favor device and assistant features with broader platform relevance over maintaining equally sized teams for every Vision Pro use case.

The trend: Apple is consolidating headcount behind AI and selected new-device priorities, while narrowing investment in less central parts of its early Vision Pro ecosystem.

Altogether, Apple is eliminating roughly 200 roles. Apple: “As we continue to evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users, we are realigning some of our teams.” It adds laid off employees can apply for other roles at Apple.

Apple is making the Vision Pro related changes to prioritize new types of devices and how people are using the current product, plus to seemingly cut costs. Immersive videos cost millions of dollars per episode to create, while the device hasn't resonated as a gaming machine.

Maybe an unpopular opinion: I never understood the focus on gaming with this current generation that was clearly not a good fit for it. And it totally makes sense that most Immersive Videos continues outside Apple. So overall pretty good news that they refocus. It's going to be

Apple is trying to have external creators/studios etc build the Immersive media ecosystem not Apple Internally. This doesn't signal anything about AVP as a product, they are treating the headset like the AppleTV device instead of Apple as an Immersive content studio

Apple is making the Siri changes to adjust roles to better meet the needs of the new Siri AI architecture. Apple is making the Intelligence Systems Experience changes to speed up development of new AI features across products.
