Cursor says it is rolling out its code hosting service Origin in early beta on all paid plans, featuring support for repos, pull requests, GitHub sync, and more
Cursor can now host your code. — Origin begins rolling out today in early beta on all paid plans.
GitHub remains central to the transition because Origin supports synchronization rather than requiring teams to abandon existing GitHub repositories. The rollout moves Cursor closer to a cloud-based development environment that spans coding and delivery workflows.
First-order effects
Paid Cursor customers can use Origin in early beta to host repositories and manage pull requests while synchronizing with GitHub.
Cursor gains a direct surface for the repository and review work generated by the AI agents it already manages.
Second-order effects
GitHub becomes both an integration point and a competing destination for Cursor users' repository activity, increasing the importance of reliable synchronization between the two services.
Teams evaluating Cursor can consolidate more of their coding-agent, repository, and pull-request workflow under one vendor rather than treating the editor as a standalone tool.
Third-order effects
If Cursor retains repository activity alongside agent execution, AI coding products will increasingly compete for the software-delivery control plane, not only for developer seats.
GitHub synchronization points to a transition model in which newer AI-native tools layer over established code hosts before seeking to own more of the workflow.
The trend: AI coding vendors are expanding from code generation into the repository, review, and workflow systems where software delivery is coordinated.
Origin, our code hosting platform, is now live. It's fast, easy to use, and deeply integrated with Cursor. Get started by syncing your repos from GitHub.
github was microsoft's gateway into agentic coding with a huge advantage but that obviously didn't work out. now the entire platform has a major new competitor for its core business as well. since it's an elon company, i suspect they'll close the gaps here wrt to enterprise
You can now deploy @cursor_ai Origin repositories with Vercel. ・Connect Origin repos to projects ・PRs & commits deploy Previews ・Merges deploy to Production Available in public beta for Pro & Enterprise. https://vercel.com/...
cursor origin is probably great but incredibly dishonest of Cursor investors to just shit on GitHub knowing full well 1) Origin doesn't support free users 2) Origin doesn't have any CI (where GitHub has been struggling bc of #1)
@EntireHQ And Cursor could not have timed their launch announcement of their hosted code service better either: If GitHub was stable, these alternatives would not be as interesting / popular! https://x.com/...
