Context & Ripple Effects
Alibaba’s Qwen effort moved from a broad release of more than 100 Qwen 2.5 models to a global open-weight distribution strategy. The latest download figures put that strategy alongside Hugging Face’s reported 2026 totals for Google and Meta.
Reach has not yet resolved monetization: related coverage says Qwen’s global popularity has not become a profitable business for Alibaba. That tension matters as a rise in Chinese-made models’ download share has already shifted the open-model competitive landscape.
First-order effects
Alibaba gains a stronger distribution proof point for its open-weight portfolio, while Hugging Face’s figures establish Google and Meta as the immediate named benchmarks.
Google’s reported 418 million downloads and Meta’s 227 million give developers a visible comparison set as they assess the reach of major open-weight model families.
Second-order effects
Google and Meta face greater pressure to sustain adoption of Gemma and Llama through model releases and ecosystem support, rather than treating open weights solely as a research or branding channel.
Alibaba’s much larger reported download base sharpens its commercialization test: popularity must translate into demand for products or services beyond the freely distributed models.
Third-order effects
Open-weight AI competition is becoming more geographically plural: Chinese developers’ growing download share gives enterprises and developers more credible model sources beyond US incumbents.
If download momentum continues to determine ecosystem gravity, durable advantage will accrue to providers that pair freely available weights with viable commercial complements, not simply the largest release catalogs.
The trend: Open-weight models are becoming a global distribution contest in which adoption scale increasingly pressures providers to convert developer reach into commercial ecosystems.
Qwen 3.8 27b was the big leap I had hoped for and is a complete success. At the same time more than 3 billion global downloads were done in the past six months, eclipsing Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc. and domestic peers to become the world's No. 1 artificial-intelligence

The launch of Qwen 3.5 kicked off a massive boom for local AI. And now it just crossed 3 billion downloads. Huge thanks to @Alibaba_Qwen for driving the open weight AI era forward.
Bloomberg: Alibaba says Qwen crossed 3B global downloads across its expanding open-weight model family. Further for downstream reuse number, Hugging Face counted 151,448 Qwen-based derivatives, 2.6x Meta's total footprint and 4.7x Llama repositories. “Qwen has become part of
Qwen now has 151K+ derivatives, 2.6x Meta's footprint, growing 200 repos/day. Chinese labs own frontier scale, Apache 2.0 licensed. GGUF repos up 464%. The open model power shift is real. https://huggingface.co/blog/state-of- open-models-summer-2026
'Alibaba's download data for Qwen makes it “one of the largest foundations of the open AI ecosystem,” the Hugging Face report said. “Qwen has become part of the default workflow for developers deciding what models to fine-tune and deploy."' www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
@karanC_12 those arent number of people who downloaded it but rather times downloaded i have personally downloaded it more than 20 times, if i was fine tuning it, prolly few hundreds bots downloads too count
@Megatron_ron The world is slowly getting accustomed to China being the de facto leader in technological advances in the world, especially related to AI 😂
